Task 4
Teaching Self- Evaluation
B.
Description:
1. For my lesson segment, I used a direct instruction approach. I started the class off with a quick intro and then asked if anyone knew anything about the term “Photosynthesis”. I then referred to a 5-minute video that I displayed on my computer. I would stop periodically to ask a question or refer to a key term that is important to the lesson. I had a few YouTube videos
ready to show depending on how long my class would be and how far along we got in the material. I used the computer for my only source of technology besides my phone recording the
session. I thought my body language was alright, I presented in front of my wife and 4-month-
old son so there was a certain level of familiarity to the room. I was nervous knowing I was I was recording myself and I felt that I was talking faster than I would like and rushing through my material. My interactions felt good but I’m aware that talking to my wife will be much different then high school students. I will need to slow myself down and make sure to ask questions and be aware if people are actively listening. My wife asked good questions during the lesson like a student would and that was good for me to have to answer on the go and engage with my audience. Feelings:
2. Before the presentation I was feeling anxious, even though I knew who my audience would be but knowing that it would be recorded made my anxiety raise. I felt comfortable with the material and technology but using my phone as an aid in the aspect of teaching is something I haven’t done before. I felt more comfortable while reciting my material because I am familiar with this topic and felt very comfortable in the setting of my house. After the presentation I feel very confident. It felt good to stand up in front of someone and address the room with material you know. I’m now eager to get in front of a bigger audience and I feel more prepared to present a lesson to an actual class. During the presentation I think my audience could feel my nervousness at first but showed signs of engaged listening and learning that helped me as the presenter be more comfortable. My wife is a middle school teacher and understands how nervous and anxious you can get before recording yourself teaching regardless of the audience. Evaluation:
3. To evaluate my presentation and teaching style I would say that the presentation went a lot smoother than I thought it was going to go. Once I clicked into teacher mode and forgot about the recording and just focus on the material and my audience, I felt comfortable. For this lesson and number of “students” I couldn’t add a group dynamic like I would have liked to include in this lesson, I was only able to incorporate direct instruction into my lesson. I thought I did a good job of speaking clearly and confident, in the recording I could tell that I was
talking too fast and need to slow down in the future. Overall, I thought I did a good job
presenting this lesson and that the main aspect I need to improve on is getting more experience
and gaining confidence when I’m in front of an audience or camera. Analysis:
4. I think the presentation unfolded the way it did because I was comfortable in my setting and confident in my lesson plan. The parts that worked were when I got into a groove teaching the information along with asking questions to the audience. The area I could improve on is initial nervousness and anxiety as well as getting more comfortable integrating technology into my lessons. I am aware that I need more experience teaching and building repetition in front of an audience or camera on me. Conclusion:
5. One thing I learned about teaching from this experience was that I can do it. This was my first time standing up in front of a live audience and teaching a lesson that I felt knowledgeable and confident in. This was my first experience creating a lesson plan and being able to see that lesson plan in action was very satisfying. What I learned about my own teaching
style is that I’m a big individual, so my voice is loud and carries, I need to be aware of that and my tone so that it doesn’t come off intimidating to future students of mine. Action:
6. One thing that I can do to improve my teaching and presentation in the future is to gain experience. I am going to be applying in my state to become a substitute teacher, the application for the substitute license will take 8-10 weeks to process, so that will give me ample time to take more classes and do more research on different teaching styles. I think that substitute teaching will give me real life experience while also allowing me to teach at various levels of education. My goal is to become a high school teacher, but by being able to substitute teach at lower levels, I can see what the students are learning at that age, and I can get experience trying out different teaching approaches. Once my application is accepted I will be working construction and teaching part time, my goal is to be teaching 2-3 days out of the week starting in February 2022.
