USAA Classifi cation: Public Identify a global societal issue from the following list that you would consider researching further for your Week 5 Final Paper: For my topic, I chose to research lack of education. Describe effective methods you used in identifying and narrowing down to just one of the topics to further research for your Final Paper. In order to narrow down my topic, I looked at the list for a topic that speaks to my heart and that I already have a lot of information on. I was very interested in lack of education, as I have many relatives that have disabilities that have suffered from a lack of education. Then, I decided to cultivate a question that I could research to gain more information on my topic. Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly. One way to determine if a source is scholarly is to determine who is the author if the author has credentials and is an expert in the field. Another way to determine is to look at the content and determine if it uses formal language and tone. A final way to determine if the publication is structured and if it contains sections like an abstract, results, and conclusion. Summarize information from at least two scholarly journal articles from the UAGC Library that will support your claims for your chosen topic. For my first scholarly journal article, I chose an article titled “The Effects of Poverty on Lifelong Learning: Important Lessons for Educators”, this article discusses how children who come from an impoverished household are at a significant risk for academic failure (Boatwright, P., & Midcalf, L. 2019). It goes on to discuss how education systems that added a poverty focus to their programs have seen success, and how teachers must understand what the definitions of poverty are in order to be able to fully assist students. For my second scholarly journal article, I chose “Beyond the Pandemic- Poverty and School Education in Scotland”, which discusses the impacts of rising child poverty and education. After the pandemic, housing costs soared, while wages did not, forcing many families into poverty (McKinney, S., et al, 2023).. In Scotland, the rise of child poverty has had a considerable impact of school engagement, with many hidden financial barriers limiting children’s abilities to attend school (McKinney et al., 2023). Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic. Scholarly sources are vital to support research writing, as they provide information from credible sources to support an argument. Scholarly sources come from experts in the field. If one provides resources that are not credible, it can create a weak paper with no factual support and invalidate the argument made in the paper. References:
