Share one example of when you have participated in a cooperative work culture (this can include a non-education related environment). What did your supervisor do or not do to create a collaborative environment?
Currently,
at my Preschool Program I work at aligns with cooperative work culture. To work together effectively, your team has to align around common goals and be clear about how you are working to achieve those goals which define cooperative work culture (Atlassian, 2024). We have monthly staff meetings where we talk over each child in the classroom with the Director about any special needs and mental health that these students or families may need. We then find
the support needed for these families and give them the resources they need. We discuss what is working or what is not working with the students such as if they are not grasping certain skills. We discuss how the staff handles certain behaviors or challenges in the classroom we may encounter. We get feedback from our colleagues and director on these concerns. This helps teachers feel supportive and provide resources to help students and families with needs, IEP’s, or
any behavioral plans.
Teachers also, do assessments three times in the school year once the first month of school, one in January and one in May to see the progress of the student’s learning. Also, provided to the teachers and families are resources for the families to work with their children at home.
As a school leader, what policies or practices would you implement to promote a cooperative school culture with your staff?
As a school leader, I think policies that I implement to promote a cooperative school culture with
my staff are having one on one check ins, staff meetings, team building activities to bring everyone together are beneficial, trusting, and showing you care. It’s important for staff to feel supported and understood so that they can cooperatively be involved. I feel like setting an example for your staff is a great way for them to understand policies and responsibilities. Example would be completing tasks on a timely manner and being on time for meetings not going over in meetings and letting everyone have their voice and opinions matter.
Plan how you might work with someone (a colleague or supervisor) who is not familiar or open to a cooperative work environment.
Not everyone will be able to work in a cooperative work environment because we can’t please everyone. Some people just might not get along with others or a more to their selves which makes it hard to work with someone like that because we want them to be able to share their knowledge and ideas with the team. However, it is necessary to show others the benefits of working cooperatively in a work environment. Communication is key to this having a conversation about your feelings of working together and how beneficial it will be for the team, the school, and the students.
