Dr. White & Peers, For this week’s discussion we have been asked to identify the grade level we focused on after watching the “Through Your Child’s Eyes'' video and to summarize challenges the students faced. We are also asked to consider the "Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE)" and describe what viewing the videos taught us about how dyslexia affects students academically and away from the educational environment and the ethical responsibilities associated with ensuring that the needs of these students are met. To begin, I focused more on the 2nd grade since this is the grade level I am currently teaching. What stood out to me the most is that the experience of this little was very similar to what I am experiencing currently in my classroom. For starters, the student's name is Maya and she is in the 2nd grade. I can sense that she is a happy go lucky student but has difficulties reading. Some things that were mentioned was that she is able to identify some words when reading and is not able to identify others that are unknown. Sometimes she will mix up her words and sounds when reading. This plays a huge role in her confidence as a reader. She also mentioned that she looks at the illustrations to be able to determine the unknown words and the meaning of them. Something that wasn’t mentioned that I noticed off the back is that she does have a slight speech impediment which can result in her mixing up her sounds. What I learned from the video is that students with dyslexia may experience difficulties with their language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words. I think this refers back to Maya's slight speech impediment. One strategy that I was able to identify from the video was the importance of having an understanding of vowel sounds. Principle 3 of the “Model Code of Ethics for Educators” (2023) states, “the professional educator treats students with dignity and respect”. I take into account that students who will come into the classroom may have a disability and may feel very uncomfortable as if they are significantly different. As an educator, I am currently in my classroom with two (2) of my second grade students (no, they do not have any disability but, one does go to speech). I know what it’s like to see a student feel nervous, shy, or even fearful at times. It is my responsibility to ensure that I am allowing these students to feel comfortable, welcomed, and confident in themselves and abilities. In my classroom I teach my students about the importance of strength and weaknesses but, most importantly, the importance of POWER. I like for my students to know that regardless of the differences that they all can succeed. I establish this each morning during morning meetings and our daily positive affirmations.
