Based on the National Association of State Directors of Education and Certification (NASDTEC) Model Code of Ethics for Educators, describe the advantages of making a good first impression with your cooperating teacher/mentor, students, and school campus important? How do the “Professional Dispositions” help you to make a positive first impression?
First impressions, whether they are in the school setting, community, or other setting, are a key element to establishing any effective relationship or collaborative team. By knowing and upholding the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE), teacher candidates are able to make a good first impression with students, staff, mentors, and other officials on campus. Based on these codes, one advantage of making a good first impression with my cooperating teacher would be showing my mentor teacher that I can effectively and appropriately show respect towards my colleagues and “maintain civility when differences arise” (NASDTEC, 2023, pg. 5). Making a good first impression not only means we are able to effectively respect and resolve conflicts with our colleagues, but ensure that the way in which we treat our colleagues translates over unto our students and their parents by communicating timely, with respect toward diversity and cultural differences (NASDTEC, 2023, pg.4-5). Another advantage to making a good first impression with students is showing them that you respect them, regardless of their “age, gender,
culture, setting, ability and socioeconomic context” (NASDTEC, 2023, pg. 3). In my opinion, the
first impression we make to our students is the most crucial in our teaching experience, because, if a student starts with a negative preconception of you, this may tend to stick with them throughout the school year and may not be likely to change easily. In addition, when we show our students that we respect them and create a safe learning environment for them from day one, then this can change the entire trajectory of the classroom (whether it be positive or negative). The professional dispositions helped me to make a positive first impression as they reminded me to hold each student to a high level of expectations as all students are capable of learning and that I should ensure that I am leading with respect for the diversity of my students, being culturally and diversely sensitive to each student I met (GCU, n.d.). GCU’s professional dispositions also taught me to promote fairness, honesty, and curiosity in each student I come into contact with, as each student is capable of greatness and deserves to be treated with the utmost respect and equity (GCU, n.d.). Most importantly, the professional dispositions taught me
to reflect on the first impressions I had with my students, and reflecting on such interactions and learning from these interactions will lead to my growth as an educator (GCU, n.d.). Reference
