Why is this article important to convey to a general public health audience?
This article conveys that the anti-vaccine movement is not a new public health crisis, but rather has gained recent popularity. This is largely in part to
the easy access of medical information on the internet and unfortunately states that many movements still cite the very outdated, redacted, and biased article by Andrew Wakefield from 1998. It is important for people to understand there have been concerns for many years, but until more recently, people have still chosen to vaccinate.
Does your distilled version of the article encompass everything that is important from the article? If not, how did you choose what to prioritize?
It does not because I felt like there were too many individual pieces to hit the
250-character count. 250 words would have been easier, and I chose to prioritize the overarching ideas that this movement is not new and ultimately
re-education is necessary to combat this issue. The article argues that the whole movement is solely based upon improper education on the topic of vaccine use, mechanism of action, and efficacy.
Were there other aspects of the article you think are also important to communicate to a general public health audience? If so, what are
they?
They touch on how morals and values are shown to play a role in the antivaccination ideas of individuals. Those who view purity and liberty high on their values will typically be more inclined to argue for individual freedoms and rights and fight vaccine mandates. They discuss how social media has allowed a large spread of misinformation surrounding vaccines, and that very little has been done to prevent this spread. They discuss policy
changes, better education, and at-risk community outreach are needed to help slow and prevent the increase in antivaccine movements.
Did you find this assignment challenging? Explain why or why not.
Initially I found it to be easy but when trying to answer the questions I realized that my article was more complex than it appeared at first. A lack of figures and images made it harder to relate to the research questions regarding the results the authors found. They didn’t have a typical scientific article outline with a hypothesis, materials and methods, results, etc. It seemed more like an informative article with minimal data pertaining to a highly talked about topic. Because of how it was written and the lack of a true hypothesis and testing method, it was not easy to summarize it into a “tweet” and I went for a very simple approach to the tweet. I settled on the
two big points which is that this is not new and that re-education is needed to prevent further outbreaks of easily vaccine preventable illnesses.
What does this assignment make you think about the way we get most of our information these days? What can we, and others, do to
stay more informed?
People are lazy when it comes to looking into information as important as their health care. They want simple, straightforward, and fast to digest information. If it does not grab their attention or they must read more into a topic, they will skip over it or skim it for their desired answer. Often when looking for a certain answer, the reader will find that, but misses other vital information or ignores information that does not agree with what they want it to be. I think podcasts and ted-talks are great ways to hear new and interesting information, that is presented in an easy to digest and entertaining manner. It’s very boring reading information but much more enthralling when it is disseminated in a soundbite or a tweet.
