Topic 2 DQ1
What are the important characteristics of scholarly sources? Why are scholarly sources more appropriate for academic research than other sources such as blogs or newspaper articles?
In a webpage designed as a research guide for its students, Grand Canyon University (2023) defined scholarly resources as something written by an expert in a specific subject field for an
academic audience. The website also enumerated examples of educational resources like peer-reviewed journals, empirical journal articles, and formally published encyclopedias and dictionaries. Chemeketa Community College (2021) characterizes scholarly sources as work written for experts by other experts using technical language, consisting of descriptions of the
methodology used and statistical analysis of results, including a list of references, and it must pass a review by field experts before publication.
With the Internet being open to everyone, students must check the credibility of resources before sharing them with a bigger audience. I can still vividly remember when I first learned about Queen Elizabeth's passing when one of my students suddenly blurted out in class, "The
Queen is dead!" and was immediately followed by "Are you sure?" and "How do you know?" from the rest of the class to validate the claim. Several malicious and biased blogs and fake news have become dangerously widespread because of social media. Typically, regular readers look for supporting evidence before they believe something they heard or read. In that case, referring to scholarly sources for academic research is essential to establish the information's trustworthiness, credibility, and quality.

Topic 2 DQ 2
Review "Title IX."
What is Title IX, and how does it support you as a student?
Grand Canyon University (2023) describes Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 being a federal law prohibiting sex and gender-based discrimination in school programs and activities that receive federal funds. The university includes gender-based harassment, sexual misconduct, and sexual violence as forms of sex discrimination in this law. The U.S. Department of Education (2020) indicates that sexual harassment or sexual violence may be in the form of rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion.
Any student, in-person or online, could be subject to gender-based discrimination. Though some people may think such discrimination can only occur between students, there have also
been several cases where an educator was involved. Social media is one place where this kind
of harassment could take place. Offenders may also take advantage of communication tools like emails or forums. Title IX empowers and makes me feel secure as I exchange conversations with my classmates and instructors. As an online learner, Title IX makes me feel
more confident in expressing my thoughts without worrying about being discriminated against for being a woman.
