PSY385_Gavac Journal Entry 5 Template Think of the concepts that we’ve discussed so far or the facts that we’ve reviewed. What concepts have you had difficulty with? Or, what facts have you found yourself wanting to learn more about? For this Module’s journal, you’ll be exploring this more! Identify one claim, concept, or fact that either surprised you or that you found hard to grasp. What information would you need to find it more compelling, believable, or understandable? Find evidence in published, scholarly literature that would make the claim/concept/fact easier to understand. You can focus on Module 5’s information or something from an earlier Module. Use the number of points as guidance for the level of detail (about 1 sentence per point related to explanation, if not otherwise specified). Please do not use any direct quotes. Demonstrate your understanding through paraphrasing your sources. Your name: 1. What is the claim, concept, or fact that surprised you or that you found hard to grasp? [only identification is necessary] Gender roles, stereotypes, and objectification 2. Why was it surprising or hard to grasp? [explain in about 2 - 4 sentences; Think about if the claim, concept, or fact defied your expectations–what expectations were these?] What was surprising to me was the amount of biases there are in health care. I did not know there was a difference in the timeframe of seeing a patient when it comes to a female primary physician than male. 3. Scavenger hunt! In the following section, you will identify questions you still have about the topic, make predictions about the answers, investigate the questions in the scientific literature, and then evaluate the evidence. What are two questions you would like an answer to related to the claim, concept, or fact that you identified above? Think about what information you need to find this claim, concept, or fact more compelling, believable, or understandable. Your questions must be distinct from each other. Question 1: Why is it that female Primary Physicians have longer visits than a male Primary Physician? Question 2: Why do men desire male doctors more than female doctors to care for them? What are your predictions of what the answer would be to these questions? Base your predictions off of what we have covered in class and assumptions you have. It is okay if your predictions do not align with what you find in the literature!
PSY385_Gavac Journal Entry 5 Template Question 1: I feel that since women are more emotional and have the more caring traits to them they are more open to talking with the patients and going the extra mile for their patients. As for men, they are straight and to the point. I feel that male doctors get you in and out. Question 2: I feel that males tend to want a male doctor so that they can really talk about their issues or pain that they are experiencing. If they were to have a female doctor, they would try mask the pain that they are really feeling to seem “tough”. Find a peer-reviewed, scholarly source that helps you answer each of your questions . Check out our Student Success Resources Module and view our page, How to Find Appropriate Sources, for tips on finding peer-reviewed, scholarly sources. Include the two references in APA formatting below . Summarize the information from your sources relevant to each question. Please be sure that you paraphrase the information from each source and use in-text citations. Your summary should reflect more than just the abstract of the source. Aim for at least 3 sentences for each source. Question 1: Over time in recent years, many researchers have found that men and women have been treated differently even when being diagnosed with the same diseases, (Samulowitz et. , 2017). Men and women can be treated for the same thing and if it were to come down to it, women would be more concerned about asking more questions and getting to the bottom of being more personable with the patient. As for men, I feel that they will ask questions with a stern demeanor which can cause the patient to feel discouraged in giving details. Question 2: Although there are still areas of gender norms that are different from one another that have not been explained, there is potential influence of gender norms that may play a factor. (Samulowitz et., 2017). In this excerpt from the article, it talks about how gender norms can influence the amount of pain one is receiving just based upon what is expected of their gender. Since men are seen as the strong figure this can lead to them hiding their pain levels. How does the information from each source align with your predictions for each question? Question 1: This aligns with my prediction because it shows that even when men and women have the same issue going on, they can be treated differently merely by the gender of the doctor. Question 2: This aligns with my predictions because since the men are normalized as individuals who are supposed to be strong and tough they will hide their pain levels with a female doctor in order to seem more appealing to her. How does this evidence help answer your questions? Think about how the evidence from each scholarly source helps clarify the claim, concept, or fact you identified at the beginning of this assignment and the questions you posed at the beginning of your scavenger hunt. Be specific.
