As you reviewed this week's chapter on goodwill, what three main concepts stand out to you as most important? Why?
Goodwill is about how a company is perceived by others, usually positively. For a company to improve its reputation and goodwill, there are multiple things they can do.
The first part that stood out to me was the idea of “you-attitude”. The you-attitude is a way of communicating where you look at a topic from the view of the reader. This concept stood out because of how much of a difference it makes. In the examples, messages sound much better when written with “you-attitude”.
Another concept that stood out was positive emphasis. Positive emphasis is about avoiding negatives and instead looking at situations as a “glass half full”. I also found it interesting that in a study, optimistic salespeople sold 37% more insurance than their optimistic coworkers. This helps to highlight the importance that positive emphasis has on goodwill.
A third concept that stood out to me is how to reduce bias in business communication. There are multiple ways to do this such as by adjusting the language you use and carefully selecting photos
or illustrations. I feel like this has become more prevalent now than it was in the past and companies are working hard to be more inclusive.
Consider this letter from the point-of-view of goodwill. Does the letter build goodwill effectively? Why or why not? How well does the audience connect to its audience, purpose, and context?
I do not think this letter helped the company's goodwill at all. Reading through the letter, I thought it was a polite introduction back into the store so I was surprised with the final section. Since the company decided to fire the employee, they did not have to include all the other information that is irrelevant to the situation. As the audience, I felt that the letter did a poor job explaining the situation.

As you reviewed this week's chapter on ethics, what three main concepts stand out to you as most important? Why?
The concept of how to present information and the importance of doing that correctly stood out to me. The example of the Challenger o-rings is an important reminder of how the unethical decision to bury information led to the deaths of the astronauts onboard. If information is crucial,
do not put in the the middle of a long paragraph. Instead, make sure it is seen at the beginning.
The information about citing sources also stood out. Although the effects of not citing information are not always clear, you should always cite things you did not do yourself. It is unethical and can be misleading if the reader does not know where the information came from, since there may be more to the data than what was shown.
A third concept that stood out was legal component to proper business communication. Under the law, most documents that employees write represent the position of the company. Communicating or performing in an unethical way can lead to legal issues with the company.

In this article by the Washington Post that discusses AI ethics, I find it crazy how big companies are dismissing the claims of the researchers. There are genuine concerns being raised, and the companies are ignoring them because it would cost too much to fix. A big con in cutting the teams is that there will be less research into how to develop AI safely. There are many ethical questions related to AI that need to be answered and these teams are working to answer them.
One pro of cutting the teams is that it saves money for the company. Another possible pro is that it enables the researchers to work in a different part of the company to provide more valuable research.
