Weekly Reflection
1)
Write a brief chapter summary (at least two full paragraphs) discussing the main points of each chapter. If more than one chapter was assigned, write a summary for
each chapter. In chapter 10 we are introduced to how to develop literacy centers and the stages of the development from reading to writing and the importance they do play for children. As children get older, the more words they should know and the more words they should be able to understand though not every child is the same in development. The literacy center helps develop their writing skills, their oral language, listening skills, print awareness, phonological and phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, positive attitude toward reading, and enhancement of other curricular areas. The placement of the literacy center is also important because if we place it next to dramatic play area where kids are being loud, the children will not be able to stay focused on their reading and writing. In literacy centers, not only should we provide comfortable areas for them to sit and relax while reading and writing, but we should be providing them with good quality books and also providing them with the right materials needed to help them practice their oral skills. There are so many different things that could be used to help children with reading and writing and to help them develop their skills even more. 2)
Please share a topic from this week’s readings, lecture or discussion board that you found to be the most interesting. Why is this topic interesting to you? I did find it interesting to read about the effective listening area because from what I can remember, I do not remember teachers having an effective listening area. I do not think many teachers really believed that this area was important or really pushed for it to be important. I do think it is pushed more with teachers, especially in preschool because the generation has changed drastically. I think I find it interesting because I do not think anyone really thinks a listening area is important, so reading about how important it is, is interesting to me. 3)
What new knowledge did you gain from this week and how will you apply it to your own children or the children you teach or will teach?
Having an effective listening area is something I want to make sure I have in my classroom so that way I can do for the children what was not done for me when I was that
age. I want to encourage every child to participate in story time with puppets, music, and even games. I want to also make sure that they can do these things independently while making sure they get along and if ask for help, I am able to provide that help for them when needed. I want make sure I provide ways for every child to feel confident in wanting to be apart of these activities.
