COM 2733 - SKELETAL OUTLINE NOTES Module 1: Topic 1.1 The Comm Tech Ecosystem Print out this skeletal outline to take notes on key elements discussed in the lecture. Note, please look over the entire slideshow. However, this is to help you with the most important topics to prepare you for the module 1 exam. Course Objectives: CLO1 – Identify key historical aspects related to communication technologies, including economic, political, societal, and cultural aspects. CLO2 – Identify modern digital communication trends. CLO3 – Explain historical and/or modern aspects of communication technologies. Module Overview: In this module, you will learn about the Comm Tech Ecosystem and the factors that influence it. By the end of this module, you will be able to: LO 1.01 – Identify key aspects of the communication technology ecosystem (supports CLO1) LO 1.02 – Identify specific examples of communication technology throughout history (supports CLO1) LO 1.03 – Explain historical aspects of communication technologies (supports CLO3) Main Questions to Be Answered by the end of the Module: Make sure you can answer the following questions by the end of this module: 1. How do you define Communication Technology? 2. What are the 4 levels of the Comm Tech Ecosystem? 3. List 2 enabling vs. Limiting factors. 4. List 2 motivating vs. Inhibiting factors. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Define Communication Technology Describe the difference between Hardware, Software, and Content (Write out and compare the definitions in space provided below): Communication technology : the hardware equipment, organizational structures, and social values by which individuals collect, process, and exchange information with other individuals. Hardware: the physical equipment related to the technology. The hardware is the most tangible part of a technology system, and new technologies typically spring from developments in hardware. Software: computer technology, requiring instructions and algorithms Content : the content communicated through the technology system. Define the 4 levels of the Ecosystem (see Comm Tech Ecosystem lecture video)
COM 2733 - SKELETAL OUTLINE NOTES 1. Define Social System (Write out the definition in space provided below): How the components of the system are connected to each other. The connections among people and organizations that make up a system can be communication links between people, financial links, or a set of common goals. 2. Define Organizational Infrastructure (Write out the definition in space provided below): Although some companies both produce and distribute hardware, software, content, or services, most companies specialize in one or the other. That’s because the capabilities needed to distribute and sell something are usually very different from the capabilities needed to make things. 3. Note that you already described the difference between Hardware, Software, and Content earlier 4. Define Individual Users (Write out the definition in space provided below): They use the technologies or what the impact of the technologies is upon the user, or they can look at how users affect each other. Enabling vs. Limiting (see Comm Tech Ecosystem lecture video) List and define the two “enabling vs. limiting” factors (Write out the information needed in the space provided below): List and Define (Write out definition in space provided below): Enabling factors are those that make an application possible. For example, the fact that the coaxial cable used to deliver traditional cable television can carry hundreds of channels is an enabling factor at the hardware level. Similarly, the decision of policy makers to allocate a portion of the radio frequency spectrum for cellular telephony is an enabling factor at the system level (political system). List and Define (Write out definition in space provided below): Limiting factors are the opposite of enabling factors; they are those factors that create barriers to the adoption or impacts of a technology. A great example is related to the cellular telephone illustration in the previous paragraph. The fact that the policy makers discussed above initially permitted only two companies to offer cellular telephone service in each market was a system level limitation on that technology. Motivating vs. Inhibiting (see Comm Tech Ecosystem lecture video) List and define the two “motivating vs. inhibiting” factors. (Write out the information needed in the space provided below):
