Identify the four types of listening styles and provide a brief explanation of each style. Which style best describes
you? Explain why.
Listening is not a subconscious act, you must choose to listen to someone. The four primary types of listening styles are listed below.
1. People-oriented
2. Action-oriented
3. Content-oriented
4. Time-oriented
When you are a people-oriented listener, you like to find something in common with the speaker. You are usually a people-person and like to understand the thoughts and feelings behind the message. Action-oriented listeners prefer clarity and precision and look for organization in a message and conciseness. Now content-
oriented listeners pay attention to detail and like to take time to think things through. If they can, they will debate what they're hearing. Lastly, time-oriented listeners, they like the message to come across quickly and prefer not to waste time.
