Joshua Burgess 6-2 Journal: Navigating Feedback Receiving feedback can sometimes feel as if someone is trying to belittle you or undercut what it is you are trying to accomplish. I used to almost take offense to feedback when I felt it was negative in nature. Only when it was positive did I listen to what the message way. I now internalize everything, the good and bad. Using it as a tool to help develop not only myself but how I can develop others in my organization. Embracing the feedback, you receive will help ensure that you learn from it and grow professionally and personally. If you have questions on something that someone brought to your attention, ask them to better explain, or give an example for you. That clarification will help you understand and make necessary changes to improve or sustain something. At the end of the day no one wants to fail and being openminded and accepting feedback helps me to grow and constantly improve. Past experiences have offered lessons learned and ensure that I continue to improve on my weaknesses and rely on strengths to build on confidence. Applying the necessary changes I need to help make certain that the future situations I don’t keep doing the same things over and over. You can constantly strive for improvement and make changes when and where they are applicable. Being aware of the group you are working together with can determine the way we give and receive certain feedback. Ensuring you present feedback in a respectful manner and being open minded to how others provide their feedback will promote good relationships. Things like clear communication and active listening will help in understanding the cultural or social differences within a group. Ask for clarification to help see things from their perspective when receiving their feedback. When you show genuine interest is the things that they are offing instead of brushing them off, they will be more receptive of your thoughts and feedback as well. Being openminded while working with a diverse team will develop relationships of trust. That trust leads to growth within, so everyone feels they are helping to develop each other and very much promotes collaboration.
