Hannah Hogue MUS 250 Music Paper 3 If I were a director of a marketing company and given the chance to choose music for two different car commercials, I would be honored. I would be able to put my musical knowledge to the test and really choose the best options. For the luxury sports car commercial, I would choose to use Robert Schumann: Carnaval Op. 9. Specifically, Valse Noble. This piece has a luxurious feel. It starts slow and steady and feels very elegant. It would be perfect for an advertisement for a luxury sports car. Robert Schumann was a composer during the Romantic Period. He was born in 1810 and died in 1856. He was a composer but also a pianist and influential music critic. He began studying law but left to become a virtuoso pianist. He had a hand injury which cut his pianist career short. After this, he began composing. Schumann was famous for his many great works. During the time he was a composer, he created many pieces that we still listen to and appreciate today. Carnaval, Op. 9 is meant as a piano solo. It has 21 short pieces which make up the whole piece. With the exception of a few of the short pieces, Carnaval is in major key. Valse Noble is in B Major. Carnaval has constantly varying rhythms meaning that no two are the same. Some listen to this music and feel a sense of organized chaos. This means it could sound like it’s all over the place but also neat and organized. Schumann composed it that way on purpose. The movements of this piece are grouped in pairs and one triplet pair. They each have a label. Valse Noble is a slow, lyrical waltz with an A-B-A structure. The A theme is the waltz while the B
theme is the slower, more lyrical countermelody. All of these elements together make for a great song for a luxury car commercial. For the standard family SUV commercial, I would choose to use Beethoven Symphony No. 7 Op. 92 3 rd Movement. This song has a fun, playful feel. I think it would go great in a commercial for a family car because family cars usually include kids thus include fun. Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. He was born in Bonn and died in 1827 at the age of 52. Beethoven is unique in that he became deaf after his career in composing started. He had an obvious talent from a very young age. He published his first work in 1783 and from then continued composing remarkable works of art. He is one of the most notable composers and we still listen to and use his work today. Symphony No. 7 was composed between 1811 and 1812. It has four movements. The third movement, Presto – Assai, would be perfect for a standard family SUV commercial. This movement is a scherzo in F major and trio in D major. The structure of this movement is A – B – A – B – A. This is the longest symphonic scherzo that Beethoven had composed at the time. The overall tone of this movement could be described as frolicking. The two main melodic elements of the opening are an ascending third and descending scalar patterns. Some of the instruments that you will hear are strings and woodwinds. Beethoven uses a repeated two-note descending gesture to be sort of humorous. It creates a quick, dancing effect. The dynamic level of this movement grows as the piece goes on. It keeps growing until the timpani instrument begins playing to signal the climax of the piece. These elements and many more are all reasons that Symphony No. 7 Op. 92 3 rd Movement would be perfect for a standard family SUV commercial.
