Module Two- Video Reflection
Describe whether you believe personal or social factors have had the greatest impact on the
participant's ability to manage change.
Personal factors have had the most substantial impact on the participant’s ability to manage change. Jonathan Wesley actively works to counteract his bias by surrounding himself with diverse individuals and is constantly asking himself who is not in his circle and who does not know (SNHU, 2021). As an African American gay clergyman, he has had to face extreme racism, discrimination, and adversity, but he continues to be a trailblazer for others and possesses
a need to advocate for others. Wesley grew up in a stoic, Christian family that did not believe in religious diversity, but through the ability to be teachable and to learn from others as he aged, he changed his mindset and perspective on others. Through his factors of resistance and advocacy, Wesley has continued to push forward and fight against the structures that wanted to hold him back and diminish him (SNHU, 2021). Social factors can impact one’s ability to manage change, but it takes personal factors to be willing to make those changes.
Describe whether you believe personal or social factors have had a greater influence on your ability to manage change.
Personal factors have had the most substantial impact on my ability to manage change. I have advocated for diverse individuals for as long as I can remember. Even when I was young, I hated when individuals faced discrimination for being different. I did not understand the hate directed at someone else because they did not have the same beliefs or values. Wesley said it perfectly when he said that one needs to be teachable. I love listening and learning about someone's point of view (SNHU Media, 2021). It helps me to see things from a different perspective and assists me in expanding my view on various topics. I have always been open-
minded and willing to learn from anyone willing to tell me their story and perspective.
