Strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and communication skills are three essential capacities that Eduardo should adopt and grow in his current leadership role. Strategic thinking –Makes you an adaptive leader (page 21 of Adaptive Challenges require Adaptive Leaders source). Many problem-solving events require adaptability. For example, in the case of Eduardo, he leads a team composed of dynamically different individuals. He will need to strategically think about how to extract their unique skills and empower them to fulfill their respective roles with a sense of accomplishment. Emotional intelligence – Like strategic thinking, Emotional intelligence is strongly connected to adaptability. Why? Because knowing what resonates with one person and not another is a key ingredient in getting the most out of your team. Emotional intelligence is strongly correlated to happiness, empathy, and optimism (p 31 of EMOTIONAL
INTELLIGENCE RESOURCE). All three of these dynamics are either in short supply or currently missing. Those under Eduardo are experiencing a sense of despair from being left out, they don’t feel heard and aren’t experiencing a sense of empathy from their leader, and this results in consequential pessimism. EI is even more crucial as it is intricately tied to communication skills in general. Communication skills – when employing the attributes of EI, communication skills inevitably improve. When it comes to oral communication, excellence in this area provides buffers against negative challenges, inspires, and creates an atmosphere of fairness as the leader is able to convey information in an objective nonbiased way ( APHIS Leadership Development Toolkit resource) 6-17 2. Describe two actionable steps Eduardo should take towards developing these leadership skills and explain how each step might help improve his situation. Empowering people to complete the work will begin to offset and then reset the existing feelings of feeling left out of the decision making process and solution implementation that individuals are experiencing. Ensuring all perspectives are heard will make people feel like they are a crucial part of whatever undertakings are attempted. People currently feel talked at and not talked with. This has created an adversarial relationship, to quote the transcript in the prompt. If Eduardo takes into account all perspectives, people will feel heard, respected for their contributions, and more inclined to see Eduardo as a compassionate leader who sees the value they bring
