Week 10: Donald Duck Reflective Essay
The evaluation presented shows a male who has a substance use disorder. The client’s
choice of substances is alcohol, cannabis, and Xanax. The evaluation shows that the client has
not taken part in treatment services before and wants to explore his options, but explains that
they like using and are not sure if they want to stop. Further, into the evaluation, the client
discloses that he has been dealing with depression since the age of 17 after being hit by a car
coming home from school. Also, the client disclosed that his brother died when he was 16 due to
a heart defect that no one knew about. In conclusion, the client spoke about wanting to go to the
military.
If the client decides to continue treatment, as their counselor, I would work with them to
count down the use of the substances. For example, instead of one liter two times a week, try
making a liter last the week. Then try to count down the cannabis to 3 bags instead of four and
cut down 4 Xanax pills to 3 a day. This way the client can slowly try to cut back on the
substances. The client and I would work on identifying his triggers and work on how to avoid
his triggers. In addition, since the client spoke about going into the military, we can discuss that
further and see which branch would fit best for the client and which steps the client needs to take
to go to the military. Lastly, see if the client would like his parents to come and attend a session
to give him support because in the evaluation the client disclosed that his parents support him in
whatever he does.
