• prior academic learning – my lesson linked prior academic learning because all the students were familiar with The R.A.C.E. Writing strategy used in 3
rd
grade. This lesson introduced SCR (Short-Constructed Response) Writing strategy. The SCR Writing strategy is a shorten version of the R.A.C.E. Writing strategy. When I explained to the students that SCR was a shortened version of the R.A.C.E. Writing strategy, they were able to understand the concept quickly and were excited that they wouldn’t have to use the lengthy R.A.C.E. Writing strategy. With the SCR Writing strategy, students are expected to answer the question and provide text proof in a written response. With the R.A.C.E. Writing strategy, students were expected to restate the question in their own words to verify understanding, answer the question, cite proof, elaborate their response and provide further clarification or reasoning and then summarize by restating the main points and bring the response to a conclusion. In conclusion, the SCR takes two points from R.A.C.E. Writing strategy and constructs a one to two sentence response, shortening the amount of time spent on each question or response. • personal, cultural, or community assets – I could have linked personal, cultural, or
community assets to the students by acting if they, family member or friend have ever felt like Niki, a character from the passage “Superficial”? In the story, Samantha was trying to get Chloe to be mean to Niki by making fun of her clothing. By asking this question, I would have been able to link the story to my students’ personal experiences. 3.
When I asked the students what the conflict was in the story, they were able to tap into prior learning and determine the conflict. This made them think outside the learning from my lesson and determine the conflict. 4.
One thing I would have changed would be to have a conflict anchor charts readily available for display. I was able to explain the process but would have like to have had a visual for my students to assist my students in retaining the rule better. One thing I would have changed would be to have models of different possible
solutions ready to display. I described multiple
correct answers, but I did
not have a physical model to show off. I believe this would have helped some students visualize some more difficult choice
5.
I would have managed my time better. Managing my time better would have allowed
more one-on-one time for my students who needed greater support or had a challenge in achieving the learning objective. This would have allowed time for me to spend with each student individually to ensure they were understanding the concept. 6.
In the article “One-On-One Teaching: The Right Method To Accommodate Diverse Learners” posted on University of the People, one-on-one teaching offers a unique way to get to know students and also is a great way to be able to accommodate students with diverse learning styles. (Singh, 2022)
This is exactly what I would have liked to accomplish with my instructional change in A5; managing my time better would have allowed me more time to spend with each student, not just students that
are diverse learners. This time would allow me to get to know my students and have a better understanding of what they need to be best prepared for the exit ticket in this lesson and moving forward. Another change that I would have like to change with the lesson would have been to have a Conflict Anchor Chart to reference during the lesson. Visual aids not only help in aiding understanding but assist students remembering a rule with a picture in mind. (6 Engaging Ways to Use Visual Aids in the Classroom, n.d.)
Making this change would have allowed my students to be more engaged and better prepared for the exit ticket. B. Submit a signed copy of the attached “Clinical Experiences Demonstration of Learning Progression Observation Instrument.”

The feedback I received from my mentor teacher was that I did a great job delivering the lesson on writing a Short-Constructed Response. In speaking with her afterwards, she told me that I keep the students engaged and the participation level was awesome. I agree with the level of engagement and participation. When I would ask a question, nearly all hand would go up immediately. My mentor teacher gave me 3’s across all standards, but one opportunity that I recognized from the lesson would have been for me to have been more familiar with the students’ names or at least made a seating chart. This would have allowed me to call on students by name, with would have allowed me to have made a better personal connection with the students. 2.
One strength that I have based on the feedback received from my mentor teacher is that using the I Do, We Do, You Do model keep the students engaged and participating. One opportunity for improvement would have been my time
