I also chose environment for this topic as well. When exploring the role of environment, and how it is present in the development of a young child’s behavior, the correlation is due to their relationship with their surroundings. The social environment that surrounds the child creates specific behaviors and characteristics taken from familial figures. The development of personality is directly linked to any experiences the child successfully accomplished or failed at. The desire to “fit in” is seen as early as infancy. Environment shows how community and familial ties are present in the development of a child’s behavior and personality. An example would be if the family unit was heavily into fitness. The child will be shown certain behaviors and traits that may influence their decision to join in the family’s fitness activities. I believe as counselors, it is important to understand the vital functions about children and how they develop. By understanding how the environment impacted the child’s mindset will help the counselor distinguish specific emotional patterns.
While reading this week’s prompt I found that all factors play an important role in the development of humans. I also agree that genetics have a massive influence on a young child’s early development. Genetics are seen as specific traits that are passed down from the parents. These genetic traits are responsible for our physical appearance, behavior, personality, and any disorder or mental defects. The passing of behavior traits and personality characteristics are shown in the behavior of our parents. Another genetic trait that is passed down is any disorders and defects. An example would be if the child is color blind. This trait must be passed down to the child through the paternal or maternal figure. Learning disorders, behavior disorders, or diseases can be passed along to the children, and influence their outlook on the world. Genetics determine a lot of our personality and behaviors. Dependent on the trait, this could be a positive or negative conclusion. Genetic traits passed down from familial figures heavily impacts how we, as humans, interact with the world around us.
