Jessica Garcia Essential Practices for Supporting Diverse Learners 07/17/23 Task 1: Equity Pedagogy A. Reflect on how each of the following aspects contribute to your personal culture and influence your effectiveness as an educator in a classroom with a culturally diverse group of students: 1. importance of and family expectations for education The expectations set by my parents were ever changing. When I was very young, I did quite well in school. I was placed in gifted and talented classes, given a ton of praise, and had high expectations set upon me. This carried on until I was in about the 7 th grade. I was struggling to focus in class, concepts stopped clicking, and I was feeling extremely stupid compared to my peers. I tried to talk with my parents and express how hard it had become, but because of my past, they immediately thought I was just not trying. I was lectured about my priorities and told that it was my own fault. My struggles continued into and throughout high school; my grades continued to plummet. I barely graduated high school. My parents’ expectations dwindled, and they lost all faith in my ability to succeed. They did not encourage me to attend college and really delivered the “you should just work for a while” speech. The actions of my parents affected my personal culture in a negative way. When I attended community college, I was ready to quit in the first week. It felt like I couldn’t keep up. My mind was made up; college was not for me. I took myself to the Dr. within a few months. This led to my being diagnosed with ADHD. My Dr. explained why I felt so inadequate in a classroom. I
have always wondered, if my parents had taken me seriously when I was in middle school, would I have been successful from an earlier age. Since being diagnosed, I spent many years finding ways in which I learn best. I earned my associate degree at the age of 27. After gaining confidence in my abilities, I earned my bachelor's degree 2021, graduating with a 4.0. My parents were astonished at my ability to be successfully educated. 2. Values pertaining to social or family groups The values that I uphold in my life today come from the lack of support that I felt at a young age. My parents loved me, but they didn’t understand me. Having this firsthand experience allows me to understand people around me better. I surrounded myself with people that supported my educational journey. I want to give my students the grace and support that they deserve when learning. My past should serve as a reminder of how I felt, and how some of my students may be feeling. One of my biggest goals, each school year, is to build a supportive environment. I was to create the kind of support that I craved at that age. All students, no matter age or environmental situations, should be without a solid support system. 3. Experience with individuals from diverse backgrounds Growing up, in the early years, I wasn’t surrounded by a lot of diversity. I attended mostly rural schools until high school. Once I moved to a new district, I was exposed to a large amount of diversity. I had friends of all races and ethnic backgrounds. Some were different sexual orientations, and a lot of different religious beliefs. There was a lot of exposure to the diversity of the world. It helped shaped my views on people, in the best way. Being from south Texas, there is a big chance that you will have a skewed view of the world. Once my husband joined the US Marine Corps, I started meeting people from all over the country. This provided me with
