Each advertisement proposed, across each media outlet, has various ethical and cultural implications. The billboard, while highlighting accessibility and modern technology, emphasizes a background of a digital reconstruction of a historical site with RVs in the background. This depiction may downplay the site's authenticity and integrity by highlighting the digital experience rather than a genuine cultural experience. The television ad aims to portray a nostalgic and family friendly atmosphere but falls into common and problematic tropes. It depicts mostly white families engaging with historically significant indigenous sites and perpetuates casual appropriation and cultural ignorance. It lacks inclusivity, diversity, and sensitivity towards indigenous communities and their cultural beliefs. Lastly, the internet banner presents a stereotypical image of an indigenous tribal chief and his family but does not accurately reflect any of the local or regional indigenous groups. This continues the perpetuation of inaccurate representations of indigenous cultures and contributes to harm against these communities.
These ads raise serious concerns and questions about the company’s values, cultural sensitivity, and audience perception. These representations might suggest that the company values entertainment and exposure rather than the preservation and respect of cultural heritage. Their misrepresentation of authentic indigenous culture has very real implications on indigenous communities and further perpetuates harm on them in social and economic spheres. One
recommendation for improving representation is for the television ad: reshoot the commercial to feature diverse families, including those from indigenous or otherwise diverse cultural backgrounds, actively engaging with historical sites. Involve diverse perspectives and representation in the commercial to demonstrate inclusivity and respect for different cultures. This would more closely align with the company's goal of balancing modernization and inclusivity.
