Slide 2
Slide 2: Speaker notes When did he stop treating you like a princess? This artifact is an image of Arial, from the Disney movie “The Little Mermaid”. In the movie, Arial is a beautiful princess. In this artifact, she is depicted completely opposite of a princess. Her face is all beat up and she looks as if she has been in a physical altercation. The title suggests that she was beaten up by a man, specifically, her man.
Slide 3 Audience Social characteristics: Aware of domestic violence issues. Empathy for domestic violence victims. Open to gender issues. Cultural characteristics : Young adults who grew up watching Disney movies. Older adults with children who watch Disney movies.
Against domestic violence
Slide 3: Speaker notes Audience: The intended audience of my selected artifact would be mostly adults, including parents, teachers, social workers, and advocates against domestic violence. Some of the social and cultural considerations that may affect how the artifact is received include the perception of Disney princesses. They are typically seen as role models for young girls and this image challenges that perception by depicting Ariel as a victim of abuse. The message of this artifact could be interpreted in different ways, for example, some may see it as a powerful statement against domestic violence, while others may see it as offensive in the sense that the value of such a serious issue is being lessened by the representation of a cartoon character. Some cultures see domestic violence as taboo and this image could be seen as controversial or offensive. Age should also be considered because people that are over a certain age may have been too old when that movie came out. Also, if people of a certain age didn’t have children or grandchildren at that time, they may not be familiar with Ariel at all. If someone has zero knowledge of who she is, they may not fully understand the message.
