Topic 6 DQ 1
What is corrective feedback and how can it be effective with ELL students? Discuss the
differences between explicit/direct and implicit/indirect corrective feedback. Provide an
example of using each type of corrective feedback with ELL students.
Corrective feedback is specific wording used to respond to English Language Learners
concerning their errors made in either speaking or writing in their second language.
This can
be effective with ELL students by building their confidence when it is specific, timely, and
chosen properly.
There are two different types of corrective feedback - explicit and implicit.
Explicit feedback is when the teacher points out a specific error, explains why it is wrong,
and how to fix it.
Example - explaining to a student that when you are doing something that
you need to “ing” otherwise the sentence does not make sense with the current verb.
Then
explaining to the student on how to fix the sentence such as “Instead of ‘I am going shop.’ we
need to add ‘ing’ and say ‘I am going shopping’”
Implicit feedback takes and restates the
incorrect format with the correct format.
An example of implicit feedback would be a
student saying “I am going shop” and the teacher responding “You mean, I am going
shopp
ing
.”
Both kinds of feedback can be beneficial however it needs to be done
