o me, interpersonal communication is a conversation between two or more people who
communicate back and forth to converse with one another. This communication involves
not only verbal communication but non-verbal communication as well. It is important to
understand that communication can be unintentional, so clarification of the
communication is sometimes necessary to communicate effectively. To me, this type of
communication is a two-way street. Both sides need to contribute to the conversation for
interpersonal communication to occur. Daily, I use interpersonal communication with my
coworkers, boss, patients, friends, and family.
After reading the results of the self-assessment, describe two areas of strength
that you have. Give an example of how you use these in your life.
After taking the assessment my two areas of strength are communication and listening
skills. I use these in my current profession. I listen to my patients as they struggle to get
through the detoxification of their medication management. Often a majority of my
patients struggle through this process because of the severe withdrawal symptoms to
encounter. Redirecting them to stay through their detoxification is imperative. Having
good listening skills allows me to identify what they are specifically struggling with so
that I can assist them in working through those struggles.
After reading the results of the self-assessment, describe two areas of
improvement that you could have. Give an example of these from your life.
After reading the results of my self-assessment my lowest score was verbal
communication. This was no surprise to me. I often struggle with my verbal and written
communication. I find selecting the appropriate words is challenging for me when I know
what I want to express. I have the hopes my deciding to pursue my bachelor's degree in
social work I may improve this area. The more I am required to have interpersonal
communication interactions with one another the stronger my communication will
become. Another area I found myself low on was emotional intelligence. To improve in
this area I look to become more aware of my emotions when interacting with my
patients who are struggling with addiction. When I can be aware of my own emotions, I
can further assist my patients without interrupting my emotional wellbeing.
