2-2 Journal: Data Assessment
Reflection:
When first looking at the data on the spreadsheet, I read each column to get a full grasp of the data that was being provided and the date that it was provided. After reading each column I looked at the column that was before it, except for the first column, to see what changes were made to it and then comparing it to the first column. This gave me not only an understanding of how the data changed in the short term, but also the overall change that happened. The main part of the data that I didn’t understand was what the ‘Shares’ row actually entails. It could be that the
row represents that the number of shares that are owned or the number of shares that were bought/sold during the period.
Comments:
When writing the actual code to perform my analysis, having comments in will be instrumental in making sure that my analysis is easy to understand. Before each section of the code, putting in a comment that would tell what I am trying to do with the code could not only help to make sure that the person looking at the code knows what I am trying to do or help me keep track of what each section is trying to do, but also help me during the review process. If the person who is reviewing the section knows what I was trying to do when writing the code, then they will be better able to help optimize it or point out any errors that were made. Strengths:
After reviewing the Course Outcomes section of the Syllabus, I believe that I have strengths in all the areas that are important for the course. Before enrolling in the master’s program, I had already begun to learn the basics of SQL as well as become proficient in using Excel for analytical purposes. I have also done a few projects using SQL and Tableau so drawing conclusions from data is something that I am already very comfortable doing and will only get better at throughout the course. Basically, the experience that already have from my own personal learning will give me a leg up in the long run. The only sections of the course that will take me some time to learn will be the sections based around R, only because this is the first time
I am seeing this platform. I should be able to get up to speed in no time however. Questions:
Will R be the primary coding language we will be using throughout the program or is that just for this course? There are a variety of SQL dialects that are used in the Data Science world and I see that we are only touching on MySQL in this course. Will this be the same for the rest of the program or will we also be touching on the other dialects?
