Grade: 43/50 (*Forgot Bible Verse) EDLC 571 – Spring 2024 January 18, 2024 Discussion Thread: Standards Comparison After reviewing both the Common Core Standards and the Virginia Standards of learning, the Common Core Standards seem to be more basic. Meaning, there seems to be a lot more interaction between the students and the teachers in reference to language arts standards. For example, allowing students to read aloud a story with the allowance of discussion right after and once that is complete, allowing the students to pair up in pairs or small groups to retell and share their interpretations of the story. Although the Virginia Standards of Learning criteria allow students to engage and interact with more advanced research by allowing them to read stories on their own, I personally think that starting with the Common Core Standards, students will be more successful as new learners because it allows for a more neutral starting point for all students. In regard to second grade, I believe that teachers should start off the year with the Common Core Standards curriculum because I think that it will allow for more student success and an easier transition than the Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum. Once they have taught the students using the Common Core Standards, they can then transition the students into the integration of learning based upon the Virginia Standards of Learning. Common Core curriculum is a more interactive curriculum which allows teachers to identify problem areas with their students and therefore topics/subjects they need to focus more on. It will also allow for them to interact and adapt their teaching to aid in better understanding for their students while listening to them interact with each other when discussing a story for example. From a teacher's perspective, I personally think Common Core Standards allows more flexibility in teaching and therefore allows for more room to adapt and change instruction to best benefit the students and allow them more opportunities for success in the beginning.
