CULMINATING PROJECT 2 I chose this unit to show how important it is in the understanding of map skills at a young age. Students will need to be able to recognize the different elements of a map and the difference between a map and globe. Students should be able to apply this as they move into a more technological world that relies heavily on things such as GPS. Students also have fun exploring Google Map and using text features to help them identify elements of maps. The unit also allows for some elements of creativity as students create their own maps. These skills are built upon when students later learn about their home state of Virginia and the landforms that impact how we live.
CULMINATING PROJECT 3 2nd Grade Standards of Learning (SOL) Social Studies SOL 2.5: The students will develop map skills by a. recognizing basic map symbols, including references to land, water, cities, and roads b. using cardinal directions Goals and Objectives The student will be able to recognize the similarities and differences between a map and a globe. Materials 1. Smartboard 2. GoNoodle Never Eat Soggy Waffle 3. Five Ponds Press Grade 2 Our State Chapter 5 pages 50-53 4. Paper for venn diagram Instruction Play GoNoodle Never Eat Soggy Waffles to activate the lesson. Ask students what direction words they heard in the song. Discuss what they mean and why they might be helpful. Open up Social Studies Textbook on Smartboard to Chapter 5 pages 50-53. Discuss vocabulary words – map (make flat hand motions), globe (round the arms), cardinal directions (move arms straight above head, to the right, straight down, to the left). Read over textbook pages; Maps and Globes and discuss. Watch the video of a drone to reinforce the idea of a bird’s eye view. Discuss. Look at the map and ask students if they recognize where it is. Talk about the different features. Talk about how the earth is round and so is a globe. Click on the earth to go to Google Earth. Start at the school, next show the state, and then finally type in Disney World. Finally, pull back all the way in Google Earth so students can see the whole world. Have students compare the map view and what they see on Google Earth. Is it as detailed? Show more examples of maps (map of school, state, etc.) and then show students a globe. Discuss. Assignment: Have students work in groups to make a venn diagram comparing and contrasting maps and globes. If time, allow students to login in to Chromebooks and explore. Differentiation Modifications: Students who need more assistance – Provide a word bank for students to use to fill in the venn diagram or allow pictures where appropriate Closure/Assessment Formative assessment while monitoring students make the venn diagram. Questions to think about while monitoring: 1. Are they able to accurately compare and contrast maps and globes? 2. How many similarities and differences are they able to list?
