Intro to Reverse Logistics Management
Professor Jad Habchi

Title: Reverse Logistics and Remanufacturing Parts: A Synergistic Relationship
Introduction
Reverse logistics and remanufacturing parts are essential in creating a more sustainable and
circular economy. Reverse logistics is collecting and transporting used products and materials back to the
manufacturer or another entity for reuse, recycling, or remanufacturing. Remanufacturing is restoring
used products to their original condition or better so they can be used again. These two processes are
synergistic, meaning they work together to create more significant benefits than either could
Background
The common linear economy is based on the take-make-dispose model, which is unsustainable in
the long term. This model relies on the extraction of virgin supplies, the production of goods, and the
disposal of waste. It is estimated that only 9.1% of materials used in the global economy are currently
recycled, and the rest are disposed of in landfills or incinerators. Reverse logistics and remanufacturing
parts can create a more stronger economy where products and materials are used for as long as possible.
This can be achieved by designing products for disassembly, remanufacturing, and implementing
effective reverse logistics networks.
Literature Review
There is a growing body of research on the synergistic relationship between reverse logistics
and
remanufacturing parts. Some of the key findings from this research include:
Remanufacturing can significantly reduce the environmental impact of products by
reducing the need to extract virgin resources and produce waste.
Reverse logistics is essential for the success of remanufacturing, as it provides the
necessary infrastructure to collect and transport used products back to the manufacturer.
Effective reverse logistics networks can also reduce remanufacturing costs by making
collecting and sorting used products easier.

Case Report on SBRU Summer Breaks 'R' Us (SBRU) represents an online travel service provider that books summer break trips to resorts for university students. Students have booked summer break trips for decades, but changes in technology have transformed the travel business in recent years. SBRU moved away from having campus representatives with posted fliers and moved to the Web. The basic idea is to get a group of students to book a room at a resort for one of the traditional summer break weeks. SBRU contracts with dozens of resorts in key summer break (Dec- Feb) destinations in Bali, Bangkok, Dubai, Istanbul, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Its website shows information on each resort and includes prices, room availability, and special features. Students can research and book a room, enter contract information, pay deposits, and make final payments through the system. SBRU provides updated booking information, resort information updates, and travel information for booked students when…

Case Study 12-1 Nest and the Internet of Things (IoT)
Nest and its parent company Google are at the forefront of the smart homes trend. Nest began as a
smart thermostat that learned how users liked to keep their homes heated or cooled. While it was
designed to be very simple to use, the machine learning technology embedded in the device makes
this Internet of Things device one of the most well-known success stories, and in some circles, the
device leading the smart home transformation.
Nest smart thermostats can be controlled by physically touching the device, or by using an app on
the customer's personal smartphone. But over time, the device learns the preferences of its users and
dynamically changes the temperature in the home, building a schedule based on the data collected
from the user's behaviors. The schedule adapts as the user's preferences change and as the seasons
change. It also knows when users are away from the home, using sensors and the location of the
smartphone…

oddlers, Toys & Trampolines
As you progress through this course and learn the ropes of Access, you’ll be working on an on-going project to support a growing toy manufacturing and retailing business. Toddlers, Toys & Trampolines, or 3T, has already opened stores in no less than 29 different states across the United States. You will be taking up different roles in this company and supporting different branches of it throughout this ongoing project. By the end of it, you should have a good understanding not only Access but also of how a company like this may work with its different departments.
First up is the advertising department! 3T is about to roll out a new line of toddler toys: robotic dogs for toddlers to play with! While the products themselves are done, the marketing strategy hasn’t been decided yet. That’s where you come in—use what you learned about data mining, data warehouses, and Access to outline a plan to come up with a good strategy.

The widespread acceptance and usage of online social networks like Facebook and Twitter has led to substantial time commitments from its users. Examine whether clients prefer a digital social network to a more conventional one. What potential effects can too much time spent online social networking have on one's mental health? Is there a time when it's reasonable to be concerned that whatever we do online may become addictive? Look for an example of someone who has gotten "dependent" on social networking sites or other online activities in a recent story from a newspaper or magazine.

Railroads Struggle to Implement Positive Train Control
Positive train control (PTC) is a complex system designed to prevent the human errors that cause roughly 40 percent of train accidents, including train-to-train collisions, derailments caused by excess speed, train movement through track switches left in the wrong position, and unauthorized incursion into work zones. PTC uses wireless communications to relay visual and audible data to train crew members regarding when the train needs to be slowed or stopped. This guidance is based on several factors, including the train’s location and speed, as determined by GPS, track geometry, the status and position of approaching switches, and speed limits at approaching curves, crossings, and other speed-restriction areas. PTC communicates with the train’s onboard computer, which audibly warns the engineer and displays the train’s safebraking distance, based on conditions at that time. Should the engineer fail to respond appropriately, the…

Case Study of Ford and the Global Car
Under the label ‘Ford 2000’ the company seeks to transform itself into a global corporation deploying a new ‘philosophy’ of doing business.
By 1993, despite being profitable, the world’s second-largest automotive producer engaged on a major programme of development. Ford also recognized itself as part of a complex and intensively competitive sector, not least with issues of oversupply in various markets. The existing business philosophy emphasized the production of cars in the regions where they were to be sold. Yet Ford was engaged in separate development processes in different regions of the world for what were essentially similar products. Moreover, while Ford was well positioned in the USA and Europe it was less well placed in those areas where growth in demand is likely. Moreover, customers are more sophisticated, more demanding and more aware of what is available around the world. The market is increasingly global. The company has merged its…
