Him2255c PROMPT: Minimum of 150-words. Your post must incorporate college-level writing in paragraph form. Simply listing the answers (i.e., in bullet form, etc.) will result in no points awarded for the initial post. You are a new graduate and recently landed your first coding position. You will be employed by a pathologist to code for their professional services. You vaguely remember learning laboratory and pathology coding in college but you aren't sure that you recall enough to confidently perform these coding duties. Identify at least three things that you might do to help you prepare for assigning CPT codes in this position. ANSWER: Discussion Post 6: If I had started my career coding for a pathologist, I would need to prepare for this position in a few ways. First, I would read through the modifiers to make sure I understand in what situation I would need to utilize each modifier. Then I would familiarize myself with the names of tests, substances or specimens obtained, and the method used so I can find it quickly in the Alphabetic Index and code in an efficient manner. I would also remind myself the difference between quantitative and qualitative studies. Qualitative studies are used to identify a certain substance in the sample while quantitative studies are used to calculate the numerical amount of a substance in that sample. As with all entry level jobs to get after graduation, there will be a steep learning curve to overcome. But with time, some tests are prescribed much more than others and will be easier to code. With time and practice, I would become skilled and proficient. References: Smith, G. I. (2021). Basic Current Procedural Terminology and HCPCS Coding . AHIMA.
