Hartsell 3 Exercise 1.2: Learning About Cookies as Spyware 2. Write a brief essay explaining in what way cookies can invade privacy . Cookies are created whenever a user visits a website in which the browser and the site send files back and forth so the user can access the site more easily. Cookies are used to track the user’s personal preferences or history so they can return to the same point they left at. They don’t track who the user is personally, but they track the device that is used and the preference the user makes so they know it’s the correct user. Therefore, cookies keep data about the user such as browsing history, personal preferences, and passwords for sites. This means cookies have personal information invading the privacy of the user and allowing for a hacker to step in between the data transmission to steal the data. Cookies can invade a user’s privacy which allows them to personalize ads or suggested links for the user. Although cookies are used as bookmarks to keep a user’s place, those cookies can contain data crucial to their privacy and any vulnerability allows for a hacker to corrupt or steal the files. Websites ask the user if they want to enable cookies, but most of the time the user does not know what information can be stored. When enabling cookies, the user may enable to site to save usernames, passwords, preferences, or any data about the user from the site. In general, cookies go deeper than just saving one’s place while browsing. They store files all about the user which creates the opportunity for a hacker to access the data through malware, spyware, or corrupted data transmission.
Hartsell 4 Exercise 1.5: Learning About the Law 1. Using the Web, journals, books, or other resources, find out if your state or territory has any laws specific to computer security. You might find the following websites helpful: 2. List three laws that you find for your region and provide a brief one- or two-sentence description of each. 1. It’s unlawful for someone to willfully, knowingly, maliciously, and without authorization to directly or indirectly access or cause a computer, computer system, or network to be accessed for the purpose of altering, damaging, destroying, or modifying whatever is accessed. This law basically states one is not permitted to access another person’s data, files, accounts, money, property, etc. without permission whether on purpose or not. They may not have the intent to cause damage, but it is still illegal to access one's computer without authorization. 2. A first-degree cybercrime is the use of a computer to change, damage, ruin, or modify different components of a computer. The conviction of a first-degree cybercrime is a felony when the user gains indirectly or directly or when the victim loses over $10,000. The fine can be a maximum of $50,000 or maximum of five years in jail or even both. This law states that a first-degree cyber felony occurs when the individual has any gain from accessing the computer or network or if the victim loses over ten thousand dollars. The suspect can be fined for fifty thousand dollars, given five years in jail, or both.
