Unit 1: Introduction to the World of Computers Topic 1: The Best GPUs of 2023. Source URL: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gpus,4380.html . (Article) A computer contains many different types of processing units, including the CPU (Central Processing Unit), RAM (Random-access Memory), and the Motherboard, among others. The one I am most interested in is the GPU, the Graphic Processing Unit, which is used for image processing and the acceleration of computer graphics. A well-designed GPU allows users to render graphic-intensive functions more efficiently and effectively. This is important to improve the quality with rendering computer graphics, which are involved in video editing, animation, and gaming. I have included a list of the best graphics cards for gaming in 2023, published by Jarred Walton, on www.TomsHardware.com . You can view the different FPS (Frames Per Second) speeds, price points, and system requirements for each of the units on the list. Walton, J. (2023, Oct 10). “Best Graphics Cards for Gaming in 2023” . TomsHardware. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gpus,4380.html . Topic 2: Computers in the Workplace; Where did it Begin? Source URL: https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-23509153 . (Article) Computers play an important role in our evolving world. They are used in almost every workplace you can think of. Computers were originally used as research tools for computer experts and scientists and then as productivity tools for office workers (Morley, 2014, p.6). It is hard to think of a time when computers were not utilized the way they are now, even after being invented. I have found the first documented use of computers on the job. It was a British tea shop and catering chain that developed the first computer for business use. “Since then, the computer has rewired office workers' brains” argues Lucy Kellaway (BBC, 2013). BBC. (2013, Aug 1). “How the computer changed the office forever”. https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-23509153 . Morley, D. (2014). Understanding Computers in a Changing Society (6th ed.). Cengage Learning US. https://online.vitalsource.com/books/9781305177048 .
Unit 2: A Closer Look at Hardware and Software Topic 1: Everything you need to know about RFID Tags. Source URL: https://www.irda.org/rfid-tags (Article) RFID Tags, also known as Radio frequency identification, is a technology that can store, read, and transmit data. They contain tiny chips and radio antennas and can be attached to objects, such as products, ID cards, assets, and more (Morley, 2014, p.54). They are a useful tool by identify products quickly at checkout and helping with Information Technology. The disadvantages they have come with their usability, security, and expenses. I included an article that shows how RFID tags work, the different types of RFID tags, and their many uses inside different businesses. Morley, D. (2014). Understanding Computers in a Changing Society (6th ed.). Cengage Learning US. https://online.vitalsource.com/books/9781305177048 . Wilson, J. (2023, Mar 8). “RFID Tags, What Exactly are They and How do they Work?”. Irda. https://www.irda.org/rfid-tags . Topic 2: Rewritable Disks – How to burn your own music CD. Source URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tvkxvfv0ZJ8 (Video) Source URL: CD-RW’s are an easy way to play your own downloaded music on a CD-reader. You can comprise multiple songs onto an empty CD-RW by “burning” the audio files onto the CD. I have included a how-to video I found on YouTube that uses a popular application, named “ImgBurn”, to create your own custom CD. Carson Clark. (2016, Apr 8). “How to burn music to a CD 2023” . YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tvkxvfv0ZJ8 . Unit 3: The Internet and the World Wide Web
Topic 1: Getting access to the World Wide Web. URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxEzGpbc64Q (YouTube) Getting set up with the internet for the first time can be a daunting task. You have research and purchase a device that meets your needs, set-up an internet connection through a provider, and format your computer to be able to use the internet. I have linked a video for beginners looking to set-up their internet for the first time. Steve goes through every step of the process, from explaining what a router and modem is to how to fully integrate your device with your new Wi-fi connection. Steve DOES. (2023, Feb 11). Home Network For Beginners - What You NEED And How To Hook It ALL Up | E01”. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=UxEzGpbc64Q Topic 2: Most Viewed Websites. URL: https://www.similarweb.com/top-websites/ (Website) Since the creation of the internet and the implementation of the World Wide Web, technology has changed dramatically. There are thousands of devices available with internet functionality, and over 1.1 billion websites created (NJ, 2023). There is a website, called Similarweb, for you to view the top ranked websites (by country, or worldwide), their average visit duration, and many more stats. NJ. (2023, Aug 25). “How Many Websites Are There in the World?”. Siteefy. https://siteefy.com/how-many-websites-are-there/ Similarweb . “Top Websites Ranking” . https://www.similarweb.com/top-websites/ Unit 3: Network and Internet Security Topic 1: Top 10 Most Common Types of Cyber Attacks

brief descriptions and reviews of resources posted by other students (one per unit). UNIT 1: brittanyma57 Brittany chose to show a video explaining Operating Systems in detail. Topic 2: Operating Systems Here is a video that explains different operating systems and their key functions. Each operating system offers users the ability to do different things on a computer without needing to know how to talk computer language. It allows a person to operate many different tasks all at the same time while managing, controlling, and processing data. https://youtu.be/rWp3dSrWx-w?si=-Wk07UxpuhsgEK3T UNIT 2: anthonype13 Anthony explained the difference between Hard Drives and the Cloud, and included a tutorial on how to use iCloud via YouTube. Storage Hardware - Hard Drives vs. The Cloud People may often be interested in learning about how they can add more storage to a device. Currently, the smallest amount of storage you can get on an iPhone is 64GB. Not too long ago, this was more than enough storage. However, as technology continues to become more advanced, people find that 64GB doesn’t cut it. Sometimes purchasing a new mobile device with more storage isn’t feasible. Having an understanding as to how external hard drives work, or something like iCloud, which can be used to store photos and videos so that they don’t have to take up space on your hard drive, can be effective.
The video linked below is a complete beginners guide on how to use iCloud to its fullest potential on an Apple device. How to use iCloud - Complete Beginner's Guide - YouTube UNIT 3: aleezanurwa This classmate talked about a different aspect of the World Wide Web. She shares a link that talks about the Dark Web and how it differs from what we have easily accessible to us. Searching the internet : https://www.kaspersky.com/resource-center/threats/deep-web The above link takes us to a website that talks about the deep dark web. Throughout this chapter we learned about the surface level WorldWide Webb and how with select imported browsers we can access the deep Webb. Not many of us would need to access the deep Webb but I think this article is relevant because it opens viewers eyes about the possibility of what could be out there. UNIT 4: kaitlynra3 Kaitlyn shares a YouTube video that explains how to protect your device from viruses and malware. How to protect your computer- This video is a short explanation about how to protect your computer from virus, and malware. https://youtu.be/6mMZFoXbKqI?si=JqH4qVXy3W0TUIw5
