Amy has a history of osteoarthritis in her hands, feet and spine, cardiovascular disease, is progressively losing her eyesight and has been prone to falls. Due to her falls risk, deteriorating eyesight and inability to manage her activities of daily living independently, Amy decided to move into the care facility. Amy does not have the fine motor skills to open her medication bottles. Her GP and her family have had her medication placed into a dose administration aid (DAA). As Amy’s care worker, you need to get the medication out of the dose administration aid for Amy, but Amy can take her tablets herself. Amy has eye drops, but she cannot put the eye drops in herself. She also finds it hard to twist the lids off her cream or lotions to apply as required. Since her last fall, Amy has quite a lot of pain and needs encouragement to get out of bed. Amy has pain medication as required/ PRN. The registered nurse has completed an assessment to determine Amy’s ability to self-administer medications. She has deemed Amy competent if you: Ensure she is sitting upright Open medication from the packaging and place it in a medication cup in Amy’s hand.
