Executive Summary Smart homes are becoming the new normal in our society. We use Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Siri to make grocery lists, set reminders and alarms, and even connect to the rest of our smart devices in our home. We can use our smartphones to cast a YouTube video to our smart tv so everyone in the room can see the content together. Everyday we become more connected to the internet, as smart devices are emerging to make life a lot more convenient for us. The purpose of this research paper is to look at emerging technologies in smart homes. We will look at the descriptions of the technology as well as the usage. We will also look at the threats to cybersecurity and privacy of the consumers. The aim of this paper is to bring to light the benefits and risks of using smart home devices. Smart home devices can provide security, convenience and streamline business functions. In this paper we’ll take a closer look at a few emerging products, their reliability and privacy as well as cost. 2
Introduction We now live in a world where most households have a smart tv, smart bulbs, or smart security system. All these Internet of Things or IOT devices are connected to the internet through your WIFI. Most often these IOT devices are connected to a virtual assistant, which you can interact with using just your voice. More and more emerging smart home IOT devices are coming to the market which excites the customer for newer more convenient technology! While the thought of a new device that could add value to your life is extremely uplifting, there are reasons to use caution when deciding on your purchase. Today we will go over how IOT smart home devices work and how they are used. We will also look at the threats to security and privacy that smart home IOT devices can pose. Technology Description and Usage Analysis Internet of Things (IOT) smart home devices are used to make life more convenient and with the many devices that are available today, they can be completely catered to the individual. “What makes a home “smart” are the interactive and internet-connected technologies within that home” (Covington, 2019) An IOT smart home device has four main components: sensors, connectivity, data processing and a user interface. (McClelland, 2016) Firstly, the sensors in the device grab data from the outside and bring it into the device. This could be in the form of GPS or cameras. This is the first type of data collected from the device to gather information. For the sensors to gather information, they need to be connected to something to send it to the cloud where the information is stored. The sensors are connected to the internet. This connection can come in many ways including cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Low Power Wide Area Networks or LPWAN or by connected directly to the internet through an ethernet cable.
