Location and Connectivity: What are the absolute and relative locations of your selected region? How does this region connect to others? Absolute Location: The state of Alaska is located at approximately 64.2008° N and 149.4937° W. Relative Location Northwest corner of North America, bordering Canada (east), Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean (south and west) and the Arctic Circle (north) Connectivity: Alaska is one of two non-contiguous states. You will need to fly, use a ferry, or drive through Canada. There are extensive coastlines and maritime facilities/ports.
Question Response 2. Physical Characteristics: How would you describe the climate, physiography, landscape, and natural hazards of your selected region? Address at least three of the physical characteristics listed above for this worksheet. Note: This is part of the Place theme of geography. Climate: Due to its vast size and location, Alaska experiences a diverse range of climates, from polar in the north to subarctic and maritime in the south. You can expect severe winters and mild summers in the interior and milder, wetter conditions along the coast. Physiography: Alaska has a rugged landscape with numerous mountain ranges, primarily the Alaska Range and the Brooks Range. There are vast tundra and boreal forests. The state's topography is shaped by the Pacific Ring of Fire, resulting in active volcanoes and frequent seismic activity. Natural Hazards: Alaska has its share of natural hazards. It is located along the North American tectonic plate, increasing the potential for earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. There are also weather/climate issues such as permafrost degradation, ice storms, blizzards, avalanches, and don’t forget periods of prolonged darkness and sunlight. 3. Human Characteristics: What are the language families/groups, religions, races, and cultures of your selected region? What are the region’s population density and economic development? Address at least three of the human characteristics listed above for this worksheet. Note: This also is part of the Place theme of geography. Languages: While English is the primary “semi-official” language, you could encounter many Indigenous languages such as Inupiaq or Athabaskan, due to the Native American influence. It would not even be unheard of to encounter some Russian due to the presence of the Russian Orthodox church. Religions: Religions in Alaska can vary, primarily there is a mix of Christian denominations (including Russian Orthodox), and due to the significant presence and influence of Native Americans (Alaskan Natives) there are several indigenous/spiritual religions. Cultures: Alaska is home to diverse cultural groups, with Native Alaskan cultures, such as Inupiaq, there are also local areas of dominant Russian culture. Population Density: The Due to the vast land (2/3 size of contiguous US) and challenging physical and climate conditions, the population density in Alaska is low compared to the contiguous US. Most of the population density is found in Anchorage or Juneau or the suburbs of those cities. Economic Development: The economy is driven by a mix of industries, including resource extraction (oil and mining), tourism, and government employment. Due to the extensive coastlines, there is a significant impact of maritime industries such as fishing and transportation as well.
