Assistive Technology Module 1. Describe the relationship between accommodations and assistive technology. - Accommodations are how students access what they are supposed to learn. Assistive technology helps them access the materials or content better and it could include; visual cues, speech-to-text software, or even text-to-speech. Therefore, AT can also be referred as Accommodations. 2. There are two interdependent aspects that make up AT. Identify and describe each. - Two interdependent aspects that make up AT are devices and services. Devices are pieces of equipment or technology that facilitate work, communication, mobility, or other aspects of daily life. Examples of devices include speech-to-text software and dictation software. Services are the supports and services required to appropriately use the devices. Examples include training and repairs 3. A) Based on the information in this scenario, consider whether Jade needs remediation or compensation. Justify your answer. - Based on the information provided, Jade needs compensation. Since Jade has a diagnosis of specific learning disability combined with ADHD and these disabilities are preventing her from meeting her full potential, she requires compensation. The compensation will help her work around the challenges related to her disability by providing her with alternative options to make up for her difficulties with performing the tasks described above B) Name at least two actions that need to occur if AT for Jade is identified and will be implemented. - Extended time to complete task, frequent breaks, and break large assignments into smaller tasks. C) Offer the parent a general explanation as to why AT does not give students an unfair advantage. Keep in mind that student information is confidential and should be shared only with other professionals working with the student. - Assistive technology helps mitigate the student's challenges by working around the challenge and allowing the student to access grade-level curriculum the same way that other students without challenges are able to access curriculum. The technology simply levels the playing field. D) Plot Jade’s progress on the graph by entering each of the data points from both the baseline data and implementation data boxes above. To begin, click the point for the data for Week 1
(baseline data). Was the AT effective for Jade? - Yes, based on a comparative analysis of the baseline data and the implementation data, the AT was effective for Jade. E) The AT implementation team continues to monitor the effectiveness of Jade’s speech-to-text software. The data they have collected are displayed below. Describe what the data pattern indicates and how the implementation team should respond - Before Implementation data, as weeks moved on and work piled, Jade found it hard to achieve a passing grade. After implementation, Jade’s grades improved at first then dropped before she got used to it. However, after getting used to it, there was a steady increase in grade.
