Solar Energy Activity 1. Assemble your solar cooker and list the included components you used. Record the temperature or observation and include a picture of each: i. Start: the chocolate chips were solid and firm ii. 10 minutes: starting to melt iii. 20 minutes: fully melted 2. Define the Law of Conservation of Energy and explain how this applies to your solar cooker. According to the principle of conservation of energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be converted from one form to another. Therefore, a system always maintains the same amount of energy, unless additional energy is introduced from an external source. This concept becomes particularly perplexing when dealing with non-conservative forces, as they convert mechanical energy into thermal energy, yet the total energy of the system remains constant. The sole method of utilizing energy is by transforming it from one form to another. This is why my solar cooker is heated up by the sun that is being transformed into heat. 3. What are the different types of energy the sun can be used for? Please research and cite the types. Solar thermal water heating systems typically consist of solar collectors, a heat transfer system, and a storage tank. The solar collectors absorb sunlight and convert it into heat, which is then transferred to the water in the storage tank. This heated water can be used for various purposes, such as domestic hot water heating, space heating, and even swimming pool heating. In addition to photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, concentrated solar power (CSP) is another method of harnessing solar energy. CSP systems use mirrors or lenses to
concentrate sunlight onto a small area, which generates heat that can be used to produce electricity through steam turbines. This technology is often used in large-scale power plants and can provide a reliable source of renewable energy. Overall, solar power is a clean and sustainable energy source that has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. As technology continues to advance and costs decrease, solar power is becoming increasingly accessible and widespread, making it a key player in the transition to a more sustainable energy future.
