How is non-volatile memory different in an embedded system and a desktop system? In an embedded system, non-volatile memory is usually put directly onto the chip in the form of flash memory or EEPROM. This memory is optimized to consume as little power as possible, and be highly reliable as embedded systems are generally deployed in scenarios where durability and efficiency are critical. In contrast, desktop systems use either HDDs or SDDs, which are separate from the processor. These drives are optimized for fast data transfer speeds and high capacity. What are the differences between embedded systems and desktop systems? The most substantial differences in these two systems are their design, purpose, and use cases. When it comes to use-cases, embedded systems are created for a specific use case, and are generally built into a larger system. Desktop systems on the other hand are more general in their purpose, and therefore are designed as such. When designing these two systems, embedded systems are usually more compact as they will need to be integrated into a larger machine in order to control it. Desktops are standalone units, that require external peripherals in order to operate. What are the advantages of various embedded system architectures? The various architectures provided by embedded systems have different advantages. For example, a microcontroller-based system will be efficient and compact, making it a great choice for low power devices such as a microwave. A microprocessor based system will offer a more powerful system, making it a great choice for more advanced devices like smartphones. Another great choice for smartphones would be an ARM based architecture, as they are incredibly energy efficient.
