Practicum 1 1. Lab 1: The figure below shows a 10KΩ potentiometer. What is the relationship between R1 and R2? What is the resistance between pin 1 and 3? (10 pts) R1 and R2 are in series, and their equivalent resistance is 10KΩ, the total resistance of the potentiometer. The ratio of both R1 and R2 allows for the resistance to be variable. By setting one resistor as a fixed resistance and the other as a variable resistance, it can replicate the potentiometer. The resistance between pin 1 and pin 3 is 10KΩ. 2. Lab 2: Assume a battery with non-zero internal resistance is connected to a load resistor according to the figure below. How does V L change as R L is decreased? Provide a justification for your answer The load voltages will decrease as the load resistance is decreased because the voltage drop across a load resistor is directly proportional to the resistance of the load. 3. Lab 3: Do you expect the superposition to hold in the following circuit? Why? (10 pts) Yes, I do expect the principle of superposition to hold up in the circuit. Superposition is only valid when you have a circuit with multiple inputs or multiple power sources. In the circuit below there are two power sources of 4V and 2V. With the utilization of superposition we can set each one to zero to find the voltage and current from the other source. 4. Experiment: Construct the following circuit on a breadboard. V1=3V (use two batteries in series), R1=5.1KΩ, R2=3.3KΩ and RL=2.2KΩ (a) Take a picture of the circuit on the breadboard (10 pts)
(b) Measure V1 after you construct the circuit. Include a picture of DMM or screenshot of AD2 software (15 pts) V1 is 2.392 Volts (c) Measure V2. Include a picture of DMM or screenshot of AD2 software (15 pts) V2 is 622 mV
