Running head: LEE BOYD MALVO’S FACTORS 1 Lee Boyd Malvo’s Factors Grace Millirons George Mason University CRIM-400-DL2 Professor Larry Guerin 22 March 2023
LEE BOYD MALVO’S FACTORS 2 Abstract During October 2002, “…10 people had been randomly gunned down and three critically injured…” ( Beltway Snipers , 2022). “It was barely a year after the September 11, 2001, tragedy, and talk of terrorism abounded” (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 1). FBI profilers suggested that it was the work of a middle-class white male, yet little did they know that two black males (41 and 17 years old) were behind all the terror (Albarus & Mack, 2012, pp. 1–2). John Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo both carried out all shootings ( Beltway Snipers , 2022). Yet, we will specifically be talking about Lee Boyd Malvo’s biological, situational, developmental, and causal factors that caused him to commit this crime.
LEE BOYD MALVO’S FACTORS 3 Lee Boyd Malvo’s Factors Biological A biological factor is, “Any biological condition or situation which diverts and individual from developing from a societal norm” (Guerin, n.d.). Some examples of biological factors are mental illnesses/conditions, physical handicaps, body size, and even abnormal genes (Guerin, n.d.). With Malvo, his mental illness/condition was that he, “… had a Dissociative Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (NOS)…” (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 206). He was also diagnosed with a non-specified Depressive Disorder, and a Conduct Disorder (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 206). This causes Malvo to forget events that are too frightening to process and remember, so he dissociates himself from the event and does not remember it (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 206). Malvo was also administered neuropsychological and psychological tests to see how his brain worked (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 218-219). With memory, attention, and processing tests, he scored in the impairment percentiles (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 219). The results raised multiple red flags for neurocognitive/brain dysfunction (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 219). “The right hemisphere, visual-spatial processing, and visual memory appeared to be more affected than those subserved by the left hemisphere, including verbal processing and semantic memory” (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 219). These all show Malvo’s biological factors contributed to his commission of the Beltway crimes. Situational Situational factors are, “Any current condition or situation which diverts and individual from developing from a societal norm” (Guerin, n.d.). Some examples would be influences by friends and/or family, poverty, job loss, poor communication, weak societal bonds, and other examples (Guerin, n.d.). For Malvo, his current situation that diverted him away from developing normally, was John Muhammad (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 205). Malvo first met Muhammad in October 2000, in St. John’s, Antigua (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 89). The young Malvo was so mesmerized by Muhammad because of the similarity between Malvo’s relationship with his father and Muhammad’s relationship with his son (Albarus & Mack, 2012, p. 89). He even
