The article states a few ineffective spelling instruction habits. The traditional spelling list, the words are often isolated to just one week and expected to simply memorize spelling lists and take a test on Friday and the idea that one-week of practice on a list of words is enough time. The authors recommend that assessments be made with students. After the assessment, the instructor should use the data so that the instructor can work in small groups for spelling instruction and then giving time students to work independently. Another recommendation was teaching students to practice words by sound, pattern, meaning, and monitoring progress weekly. During my school years, I remember spelling tests I had to memorize all of the spelling words. I remember I had to memorize the words on flashcards and had my parents quiz me. I remember practicing my spelling words all week as a child and not understanding the meaning of the words. I have observed many teachers using this method of teaching in the classrooms. My takeaway from this article is how important it is to differentiate spelling instruction and move away from the boring traditional spelling list. There is a need for a differentiated spelling approach for our students to reach their highest potentials. I will definitely use a variety of fun ways to teach spelling to my student. Is this different from the way you were taught spelling or how you see spelling taught now?

I will definitely use a variety of fun ways to teach spelling to my student.                         spelling tests in which the entire class looks at the same list for a week a and spelling homework that has the students write the word three times each and tested on Fridays, s imply memorizing spelling lists without understanding can be ineffective . In traditional spelling programs students study to take the test, so they learn for the sake of a test, and not for the sake of understanding words. In differentiated spelling, they study the word to spell correctly and they learn for life. I also plan on utilizing the model of teaching spelling that Katherine Hilden and Jennifer Jones recommended. In traditional spelling, the words are often isolated to just one week. So not only are they isolated to just a list, but they’re also isolated for just one week. Monday you get your words, Friday you take your test and
