2 Roe V Wade Overturned at Last? Capstone Project: Roe V Wade Overturned at Last? On June 28, 2022, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning the 1973 Roe v Wade decision. For nearly five decades, Roe v Wade had granted women across America the constitutional right to an abortion. Its reversal sent shockwaves through the country, sparking impassioned debates and calls to action on both sides of the issue. Local news coverage in traditionally conservative states portrayed the ruling as a victory for religious liberty and moral justice. Anchors and commentators in states such as Texas, Florida, and Mississippi overwhelmingly supported overturning Roe v Wade, seeing it as rectifying an egregious mistake (Smith, 2022; Jones, 2022). At long last, their viewpoint triumphed, dealing a decisive blow against the supposed “right to privacy” that had for so long undermined democracy itself. In contrast, liberal news outlets in California, New York, and Illinois condemned the Court’s decision, warning women would lose control over their health and destiny (Lee, 2022; Williams, 2022). There were warnings of women dying from unsafe illegal procedures and predictions the nation was plunging into a new era of “back-alley abortions.” Fears of women’s subjugation and a return to the darkness of the pre-Roe era dominated progressive commentators’ analyses. At the national level, prominent news magazines and news broadcasts provided a more balanced yet polarized analysis. While some heralded it as finally corrupting a “Constitutional fabrication” that had “slaughtered innocents” for decades (Cohen, 2022), others decried it as a
3 Roe V Wade Overturned at Last? misogynistic attack on women’s basic rights (Stewart, 2022). There were impassioned op-eds on both sides, as well as calls for nationwide protests, legislation to codify Roe v Wade into law, and amendments to enshrine its protections permanently in the Constitution. The ruling polarized America along ideological lines, resurrecting many old wounds. International reactions also varied widely based on region and values. News outlets in predominantly Catholic Latin America, Spain, and Italy hailed the ruling as a triumph of faith over secular excess (BBC, 2022; El País, 2022). They saw it as a victory for moral order and traditional family structures. In contrast, Western European and British news coverage condemned it as undermining progressive advancement on women’s rights, fearing it could strengthen the influence of religious conservatives in domestic politics and transatlantic allies (The Guardian, 2022; Le Figaro, 2022). They framed it as a threat to liberal democratic values. Chinese, Indian, and other Asian news reports were more neutral and analytical, examining how debates over abortion, women’s roles, and religious authority might be impacted domestically in their countries. But there was also an awareness that ideological battles in America could reverberate globally. Latin American reports were mixed, with some hailing it as a righteous defiance of Western secularism and others criticizing it as an imposition of conservative North American values. There were also concerns about the influence of evangelical groups that have gained power in the region, and how overturning Roe v Wade might strengthen their stance on social issues. Australian and New Zealand news outlets largely condemned the ruling, seeing it as a worrying sign of declining progressive values in American democracy that could undermine hard-fought rights gains for women and minorities internationally. At the same time, there was an analysis of how it might impact debates
