Sustainable Aviation Fuels: Status, challenges and prospects of drop-in liquid fuels,
hydrogen and electrification in aviation
1.
What is the APA formatted reference for this article?
Bauen, A., Bitossi, N., German, L., Harris, A., & Leow, K. (2020). Sustainable Aviation Fuels: Status, challenges and prospects of drop-in liquid fuels, hydrogen and electrification in aviation.
Johnson Matthey Technology Review, 64
(3), 263-278. 10.1595/205651320X15816756012040
2.
What is the article about? Summarize the article in one to two paragraphs.
The article discusses the challenges and prospects of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). These fuels are derived from renewable or waste-based feedstocks and provide reduced carbon dioxide emissions relative to petroleum-based fuels. SAFs can increase the economic, social, and
environmental sustainability of aviation operations. Although SAFs were initially approved for use in commercial flights in 2011, there are cost concerns when compared to fossil-based fuel. SAF can cost between two to five times more than conventional jet fuel. Hydrogen can be an option for the long-term, but it requires major changes in aircraft design and infrastructure. Also, electrification is increasingly becoming an alternative for powering and providing propulsion in aircraft, but also faces challenges when logistically implementing the option (Bauen et al., 2020).
3.
What is the research problem statement (if possible, use direct quote with APA formatted citation)? To what extent does the problem statement communicate the research problem to the reader? The research problem statement in this paper is: “Aviation fuel demand is expected to continue to grow over the next decades and continue to rely heavily on kerosene fuel for use in 2
jet engines. While efficiency and operational improvements are possible ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, decarbonisation will need to heavily rely on low carbon kerosene drop-in alternatives” (Bauen et al., 2020, p. 263).
The problem statement effectively communicates the research problem and its significance to the reader, although following recommendations on the Eagle Problem-Solving Primer could make the problem clearer and easier for the reader to understand. The problem statement should begin with “The problem to be addressed in this study is…”. The significance of this problem can be found in other parts of the paper, but a paragraph with the information for a problem statement can make the problem clearer and the paper better organized for the reader.
4.
What is the intent of the researcher (if possible, use direct quote with APA formatted citation)? To what extent does the intent of the study communicate what the researcher will do about the problem? The purpose statement is: “This paper reviews the status, challenges and prospects of alternative fuels and electrification in aviation” (Bauen et al., 2020, p. 263). The intent effectively communicates what the researchers will do about the problem as they aim to provide insights into the potential solutions to the problem of GHG emissions from aviation fuel.
5.
What are the research questions or hypotheses (if possible, use direct quote with APA formatted citation)? Does answering the research question or drawing conclusions on the hypotheses resolve the research problem?
The paper does not explicitly state research questions or hypotheses. However, based on the intent of the researchers and the content of the paper, it can be inferred that the research questions are related to the status, challenges, and prospects of alternative fuels and electrification in aviation (Bauen et al., 2020). Answering these research questions would provide insights into the potential solutions to the problem of GHG emissions from aviation fuel.

6.
Describe the quality, depth, and organization of the literature review. This paper's literature review is of excellent quality, depth, and organization. The authors present a complete review of alternative fuels and electrification in aviation, covering history and
development, legislation, and advancements in the production of alternative aviation fuels. The literature review is well-organized, with distinct headings and subheadings that lead the reader through the many issues discussed. In addition, the writers include several references to back up their statements and include further reading for readers.
7.
What is the research design? Is the research design correct for the intent of the study and type of data used in the study? If so, why? If not, what research design and data analysis do you recommend? To what extent does the data collection and analysis plan gather and assess the data to answer the research questions or hypotheses? This paper's research design is a literature review. The authors study and analyze existing
literature on alternative fuels and aircraft electrification to give insights into the current state, problems, and possibilities of these technologies. A literature review is an effective research strategy for this study's purpose since it allows the writers to consolidate and assess current data pertaining to the topic. The study's material is based on published research and papers on alternative fuels and aircraft electrification, which is acceptable for a literature review. The data collection and analysis plan include reading and analyzing existing literature in order to collect and evaluate data pertinent to the research questions. This approach is effective in answering the research questions by providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on the topic.
8.
Are the results, conclusions, and recommendations logical and reasonable based on the outcomes of the data analysis? If so, why? If not, what corrections do you suggest?
4
Based on the literature review the paper explores, the conclusions gather the information so the reader can compare alternative fuels in an easier manner. The findings of the study collect information based on the literature research so that the reader may compare alternative fuels more easily. Given the presented data analysis in the study, the conclusions reached appear to be logically and reasonably plausible. The writers have comprehensively evaluated the current state of alternative fuels and electrification in aviation, basing their findings on a thorough investigation of the available literature on the topic.
9.
Describe the quality of the format and style of writing. What improvements would you suggest to the author to improve the document?
The paper is well-organized, with clear headings and subheadings that guide the reader through the different topics covered. The authors use a formal and academic writing style, with appropriate use of technical terms and concepts. The paper also includes numerous references to support the authors’ claims and provide further reading for interested readers. Apart from ensuring the problem and purpose statements are written more clearly, no other improvements are suggested.
