Writing in scholastic, creative, civic, and professional settings requires people to work with one another. Our third major writing project in English 103-130, the one act play, was assigned midterm and us due in class Week #10. In addition to learning how to construct a short play on our course theme of family legacy, you are learning how to manage a writing project on deadline. Please reflect and write about how you are learning to write as part of a team. How do you play to individuals’ strengths and compensate for their shortcomings to get the optimal result? This class has been such a fun learning experience for me as I have always enjoyed watching plays and I love seeing valuable stories being played out in front of me. I got to really understand the specifics of writing and drama in a way that intrigues the audience and keeps them interested until the very end. The final assignment of this class asked for an extremely fun activity which was to write a one act play ourselves. My teammates and I have been having a great time designing this play. We are a group of three who all come from very different backgrounds and have different stories to tell, different writing styles, there is a lot of diversity in my team which gave us so many ideas to work through while deciding the main theme of our play. This played to our strength. After a lot of brainstorming, it turned out we all had something in common which was that we were great fans of family mystery. Thus, we decided to keep the storyline revolving a family mystery. In this group, each one of us has different interests and skill sets and therefore, we had some things that we could both individually and collaboratively contribute to the play. For example, I proved to be valuable in terms of the idea of the story, and I was assigned to think of a great ending of the play which would keep the audience gripped and leave them wanting more. Another team member of mine was strong with her word choice and knew how to keep the narrative of the play flowy and clear, so she held the fort in that aspect. My last teammate was highly skilled in thinking of the characters, defining a profile for each character and gave a suitable structure to the play. We have successfully complimented each other’s diverse skill sets and I am confident in my team’s ability to deliver beyond expectations with our unique story line. We have also tried to create a safe space within our team where every individual feels respected and valued. This is primarily to enable constructive criticism and grow off the feedback we give each other. I loved that each one of us could have a part in this assignment, and I really enjoyed our working process and teamwork ethic. I am sure we are ready to come up with a great story and an even more interesting play for the end of class assignment.
