Instructional Modifications for Gifted Students Grade Level and Area of Licensure: EC-12 Special Education
Since my area of licensure is Special Education, I am going to base my accommodations on a 5
th
Grade ELAR curriculum. 1.
Compact the Curriculum: Identify the learning objectives and topics that gifted students have already mastered or that they can grasp quickly. Provide them with alternative assignments or projects that challenge their higher-level thinking skills. For example, in an English Language Arts class, you could offer gifted students the option to choose more
complex novels or assign them additional writing tasks that require advanced analysis and critical thinking.
2. Differentiate Assignments: Offer a range of assignments with varying levels of complexity and depth. Allow gifted students to choose from a menu of options that align with their interests and abilities. For instance, in a 5th-grade ELA class, you might provide gifted students with the choice to write an in-depth character analysis, create a multimedia presentation, or write a persuasive essay on a more challenging topic.
3. Provide Enrichment Activities: Offer opportunities for gifted students to explore subjects beyond the regular curriculum. This could include independent research projects,
book clubs, or participation in online competitions or academic challenges. In an ELA class, you could encourage gifted students to join a literature circle where they can discuss and analyze advanced novels or poems.
