Reading response for Tyson on “Marxist Criticism”.
1. What is Tyson’s thesis in her essay on “Marxist Criticism”? In other words, what are her main claims/main topics? 2. What new/important terms did you discover? List at least three. (Add and define these in your research journal’s vocabulary list.)
3. What questions did you have about the reading? What did you find interesting or learn? (If you can’t answer the question(s) in your group, do research to answer them.)
4. What is 10 Minute Philosophy’s main topic/claim in the video False Consciousness? How is this main topic/main claim similar to Tyson’s discussion? How is it different? Explain how.
Group members: Naomi Ibhahe, Aisha Rashada, Jaliyah Lee, Patrinia, and Ali Aroud.
Tyson introduces Marxist Criticism and the struggles that the lower class undergoes. She explains how aggressively and economically dominated the minimal societies are. Tyson explains the stagnant triangular pyramid of societal class, pointing out how the lower class remains at the bottom.

New/ important terms:
Bourgeoisie: People who control the world’s natural, economic, and human resources.
Proletariat: The lowest class of people in society; the working class.
Classism: Something that is done in favor of a particular societal group.
The first question I had was “what is Marxist theory anyways”, but my question was quickly answered as
I read on and understood the claims Tyson made. I find it interesting that this Marxist theory has actually been occurring since the 19th century till date. Though the intensity of marxism was much higher in the olden times, we still see such traits in these modern times. The economic system is built in a way that almost keeps people at the bottom, unless they devise a way to break from that system.
The main claim in this video is a mindset molded into believing that some things which are actually negative for us are painted as good. The narrator in the video uses common products such as cigarettes and high heels to explain his point. The narrator of the video’s claims are similar to Tyson’s because they
both discuss the classification system. One difference I can see is that the video’s narrator points out that the reason for these levels of classification is “false consciousness”. They describe this term as being
convinced that something which is indeed bad for you is good, so much so that you even cherish it.

Reading Response for Tyson on “Feminist Criticism”.
Naomi Ibhahe, Jacqueline Sanchez, Priscilla Odaibo, Quhyn Nhu Nguyen.
1. What is Tyson’s thesis in her essay on “Feminist Criticism”? In other words, what are her main claims/main topics?
Tyson introduces Feminism as an ”oversimplified negative view”. She also mentions gender roles, which could be seen as a form of colonized consciousness. It has become normalized in society for women to be seen as emotionally weak, and/or submissive. This normalized idea gives the males an upper hand because their societal view is the opposite of women’s (83).
2. What new/important terms did you discover? Identify and define at least three. (You can use these for your research journal’s vocabulary list.) *Find definitions from your assigned reading, not from outside sources; cite the page number for the definition. Patriarchal programming: This is basically a system bent to keep women beneath. Tyson gives an example of this which is young girls being told (if not by parents or teachers, by body language, tone and
facial expressions) that they can not do math. This infers that the math should be left to men. This same
Ibhahe 5
system is seen in the movie “Hidden Figures” where the African American mathematical genius who is a woman is looked down upon based on this same mentality (87).
Male Programming: This is a technique of bending men into the desired image they should hold, such as providing financially. This technique is designed in such a way that being unable to meet such expectations threatens a man’s masculinity: manhood (88).
Psychoanalytic feminism: The focus of this as inferred by the name is women’s psychological experience (96).
3. What questions did you have about the reading? What did you find interesting or learn? (If you can’t answer the question(s) in your group, do research to answer them.)
I found it interesting how you could never really pay attention to a problem until you label it, because then it grasps attention. Such as male Programming. This is something that we all do, including some. We’ve normalized the stereotype of men attaining certain goals, or meeting certain expectations, without realizing that it has turned into oppression.
4. After watching the following videos, "How to Identify 'Misogynoir'" and "End Adultification Bias,” define misogynoir and adultification. Also, explain their relevance to feminism: why are they important concepts to feminists, especially black feminists (see Tyson 106-07)?
Ibhahe 6
Misogynist: Is an ingrained prejudice against black women.
Adultification: Classifying someone as grown before their time. The ladies who spoke on these terms explained that these work hand in hand against black women. Particularly the younger generation.
They stated that black women are victims of both racism and feminine programming.
