CRITICAL RESPONSE EMAIL ASSIGNMENT (15%) To: NavaAhmed@royalbankofcanada.ca From: NadiaWemboloa@royalbankofcanada.ca Date: February 2 nd 2024 Subject: Critical Response for Amy Tan’s (1991) Essay “Mother Tongue” Hi Nava, I hope all is well! Sorry we missed you at the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Workshop last week. I am following up on your request for a summary of the most important points from the Amy Tan’s (1991) Essay “Mother Tongue” reading and to share with you a critical response to the text. Amy Tan discusses the difficulties she faces as a result of her mother’s limited English proficiency, and how this impacted her own understanding of language and her writing career. The main message of the reading is that language is not only a means of communication but also a tool for asserting identity and power, which can empower or disempower people, particularly those with immigrant backgrounds. This powerful statement is significant and relevant to our continued efforts of creating a workplace environment that fosters a sense of belonging and respect for people, especially those with ethnocultural differences. I highly recommend reading Amy Tan's "Mother Tongue" to anyone who can relate to her story. As an employee raised by immigrant parents, I found the reading compelling, specifically through Amy Tan's use of "the development of a sound argument" as her communication strategy. She argues that viewing her Mother's English as "broken" shows the misleading perceptions that others have of her. One example is that of the stockbroker and doctors who refused to take her seriously due to her "broken English," requiring Amy to speak on her behalf. This example demonstrates the overall impact of language on our lives, the importance of understanding and embracing different Englishes, and the powerful effects of exclusion and discrimination that our peers may face or have faced through language. I hope this will encourage us to treat our immigrant employees as equals, regardless of what/how they speak. Let me know if you need any more information. Best regards,
