Arayah Cottoner MUS121 (E06N) 05/01/23 Concert Report For my concert report review I will be doing the Virtual option, as that being a stay at home mom and with my husband work schedule it was very conflicting to get out to a concert in person. The different pieces I will be reviewing in this paper will be Mendelssohn’s : "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Barber’s: “Adagio for Strings”, Violin Concerto: "Spring / La Primavera" in E major, and Beethoven’s : Symphony No. 7 in A major. The first piece I listened to and will be discussing is Mendelssohn’s : "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Composed and written by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1826 at just 17 years old. This piece started off soft with two flutes and immediately brings in violins to up the timbre of the piece. The woodwind instruments come in bring up the crescendo of the piece. The intensity of the piece bounces back and forth from soft to being progressively strong. Just for the ending to bring the piece back full circle and end softly just as the way it began. This piece was very interesting for me. Listening to this piece I could close my eyes and envision a beautiful ballet being performed to this piece. I could imagine the beautiful story being told behind this piece. Each part of this piece made you feel the beginning, the climax, and the end of the story this piece was trying to tell, all by the way this piece was played and changed directions throughout it. The second piece I listened to and will be discussing is Barber’s: “Adagio for Strings”. Composed and written by Samuel Barber in 1936. This piece was arranged for string orchestra
from the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11. All the string parts, including the basses (which would not have appeared in the original string-quartet version), take turns with the deeply saddening melody. This piece was very beautiful, it kept the same melody for the most of the piece with occasional crescendos throughout the piece. It gives you the feeling of being emotional and coming over with great sadness. It has also been used during different times of America’s national mourning time periods. The third piece I listened to and will be discussing is Violin Concerto "Spring / La Primavera" in E major. Composed and written by Antonio Vivaldi around 1718-1720, when Vivaldi was the court chapel master in Mantua. This piece is apart of “ The Four Seasons” (Italian: Le quattro stagioni) which is a group of four violin concertos. In the introduction it definitely gives you the Spring feeling and imagery Vivaldi was hoping for. It starts out with the sound of birds chirping I would think as the sun begins to rise on a beautiful Spring day. This piece goes from Allegro to Largo back to Allegro again. Listening to this piece gave me a sense of a beautiful Spring day like in a Disney Princess movie. When the princess wakes up to a beautiful warm day with birds chirping and animals roaming all around. And the princess is just so happy to start her day full of adventures. This piece by far was my favorite to listen to, as I’ve self consciously heard this piece plenty of times in movies and tv shows. The fourth and final piece I listened to and will be discussing is Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 in A major. Composed and written by Ludwig van Beethoven between 1811 and 1812. He was able to compose this piece all while improving his health in Teplitz. It is a symphony in four movements. The first movement being Poco sostenuto – Vivace (A major), the second movement being Allegretto (A minor), the third movement being Presto – Assai meno presto (trio) (F major, Trio in D major), and the fourth movement being Allegro con brio (A major).
