Rollinson 1 Eeamya Rollinson Professor Anna Schachner English 1101 26 October 2021 Changing the World One First Grader at a Time I grab my lesson plan- that I worked weeks to prepare, art supplies, and books; then I head to school. I approach a beautiful door covered with flowers and bees, each bee containing the name of a different student. The top of the door says “Ms. Rollinson’s class is the place to bee”, inside is a jungle-themed classroom. Charts with various jungle animals, numbers, colors, and letters of the alphabet are plastered all over the walls. Tiny desks and chairs arranged in groups of four are scattered around the room, with a reading corner so intriguing students cannot wait until independent reading time. I get settled and go over my lesson plan again as I wait for my students to finish their breakfast and join me in the classroom. By 8:00 am, my students and I are starting the day with mathematics. Throughout the day we will cover language arts, social studies, and even begin fun science experiments. We take a break approximately around noon and prepare for lunch and recess. I prepare my calming music playlist which will play in the background as we transition back into the classroom. It helps my students settle down before we turn our “thinking caps” back on. I am sure, everyone has a favorite teacher that they remember, and how that specific teacher made learning fun or even helped you through troublesome times. That one teacher who instilled in you that you can do anything you put your mind to. We find ways to incorporate creativity and fun into learning that will intrigue our students. Although some days are hard, kids filled with jitterbugs and not being able to process their emotions (which leads to tantrums); it is
Rollinson worth the headache. Teaching is not our only role, we are mentors, nurturers, role models, and support systems. Although I am not a first-grade teacher yet, if I stay on the correct path and earn my de- gree, I will be one step closer to reaching my goal. I searched on Georgia State Library for arti- cles that pertain to questions about my career. I will be researching what other necessary steps do I need to take to begin my teaching career aside from a degree and any other concerns I may have regarding this profession. For example, how will Covid-19 impact future teaching? Is this career fulfilling? What school/programs should I attend? One perk I am certain I will enjoy is summer vacation! Teaching can shape the world for a better future; therefore, it is never a dying profession. The purpose of my research project is to get a better understanding of what my future career holds. After I am done, I will be able to determine the remaining steps after graduation such as programs I need to complete, will I truly love this career, and what the future of teaching will be like. People often refer to first-grade teachers as glorified babysitters, who teach just addi- tion, subtraction, and other simple lessons. However, first-grade teachers instill the foundation of learning. This is the most important grade in elementary education, students learn decision- making, how to make scientific observations, literacy, grammar, and even self-reliance. Teaching requires patience, dedication, creativity, and adaptability. All characteristics which I possess, that is why this career is perfect for me. As I started my research into my future career, I realized I have only heard the nega- tive parts about teaching such as low pay, limited promotion options, and excessive amounts of stress. I needed to hear the positive, so I Google searched “Why do teachers teach”. Under 2
Rollinson the “Interesting finds” section, I saw a few articles that caught my attention. The article “Why become a teacher? Preschool Educators Share What They Love About Their Work” stated “There is nothing in the world like working with young kids. The stories they tell, the faces they make, the laughter, and the tears make this job an experience unlike any other. Becoming a preschool teacher means you get to watch children explore the world right as they’re filled to the brim with excitement and wonder” (Flavin). This sounds like a fun and fulfilling career to me, and this paragraph made me feel like I have made the right choice about my career! I needed to research how will the future of teaching be affected by Covid and the best program to complete my teacher certification and a bachelor's in elementary education. It was alarming reading about how Covid-19 will impact future teaching. The article “Teachers Are More Likely to Experience Depression Symptoms than Other Adults” asserts teachers experience more depressive symptoms and “ They’ve had to contend with technical problems—both theirs and their students’—and the fear of contracting COVID-19 in the classroom. They’ve struggled to engage students who are emotionally checked out or who have stopped coming to class. I be- lieve teaching during the pandemic may require a little extra skill since it requires children to have to sit still, be efficient with technology, and stare at a screen for hours. However, the article “Learning and Teaching Online During Covid-19” claims teaching early education is an indis- pensable role, and “ Online teaching experiences provided these preservice teachers with opportu- nities to interact with children, as well as to encourage reflection on how best to promote young children's development and learning with online communication tools” (Jinyoung). Learning on- line tools is an essential skill for both students and teachers. Now that I have covered what the future of teaching will be like. I wanted a positive opinion of teaching from an early educator. The beginning of Maya Lee’s video “What Makes Being an Elementary School Teacher Diffi- 3
