Assignment 2B: 5E learning plans folio
Year 4 – Earth and Space Sciences
Australian Curriculum Content Descriptions
Science Understanding
Earth’s surface changes over time as a result of natural processes and human activity (ACSSU075)
Science as Human Endeavour
Science knowledge helps people to understand the effect of their actions (ACSHE062)
STEM skills
Identify and explore a range of digital systems with peripheral devices for different purposes, and transmit different types of data (ACTDIK007)
Introduction/Rationale (150-200 words)
Through these sequence of lessons, Year 4 students will learn how earth’s surface changes overtime due to human activities and natural processes (ACARA,2018, ACSSU075). This lesson plan focuses on weathering and erosion. Students will use a range of Information and communications technology (ICT) like iPad and IWB to view information about weathering and erosion and take pictures of sites in the school grounds that are affected by weathering. Students will also indulge in hands on experience of looking for signs of weathering and erosion on the school grounds. Hands on approach to learning builds the children’s confidence, empowers their imagination, and motivates them to take more interest in their own education (
Goodwin University,2018). The students will also conduct their own experiments and
learn how natural elements like rain and wind affect the land/soil. Additionally, this lesson sequence incorporates basic scientific skills such as making
observations, making hypothesis, testing hypothesis, and making conclusions (
Home Science Tools,2021). 2 | P a g e

Justification for choices made
Engage
The teacher shows a video ‘Earth Changes Slowly- McGraw
Hill, Inspire Science’ (Flink. J,2022) to students on Interactive White Board (IWB).
Then the teacher brainstorms what students know about the Earth’s surface. As she brainstorms, she writes key terms on the IWB.
After the brainstorm session, students write the key terms and
their descriptions in their workbooks. Using ICT in the classroom to show an educational video
generates the prominent level of motivation and interest in students (
Kawade and Kulkarni, 2012). Brainstorming in the classroom helps promoting children’s creativity and spontaneity in students (Niledu, 2018).
Explore
The teacher will divide students
in small groups and will go out in the school ground and search for any sites that are affected by weathering and has
gone through erosion. They will
take pictures of these sites using their iPads.
When the students come back in the classroom, the teacher will lead a discussion about their findings and challenging their ideas. The forming of children into groups an elevated level of engagement in exploration, which we have described elsewhere as a community of
inquiry
modelling the knowledge-
building practices of scientists (Tytler et al.2011).
Explain
The students then prepare their individual presentation by making PowerPoint slides. For this presentation they will transfer the pictures taken in their group findings from last experience in their own iPad.
In the presentation, the students
will talk about what they observed. The teacher will facilitate the discussion by Through this experience, students will demonstrate their individual knowledge of the changes in earth’s surface overtime because of natural processes and human activities 3 | P a g e
asking questions to the student presenting to get his/her understanding of the observation and topic. (ACSSU075). Elaborate
The students will conduct their own experiments in groups. For this experiment they will be provided soil, straw, and water spray bottle by teacher.
They will use spray bottle(rain) and blow through the straw(wind) to see its effect on the soil.
They will then record their own findings, which will be later discussed with their peers. Students enhance their prior knowledge through hands-on
experiences, which increases
their critical thinking and problem-solving skills (Bybee
et al., 2006).
Evaluate
The teacher will provide students with a worksheet to evaluate their knowledge of weathering and erosion. Image: Worksheet from Home
The worksheet evaluates what knowledge the students
have acquired about the effect of human activities and
natural processes on earth’s surface throughout the sequence of lesson plans (ACSSU075). 4 | P a g e
