1 Le Anh Le Sarah Corp English 102 #29225 05 September 2023 Is bullying or cyberbullying in schools a major problem? “Nationwide, 19% of students in grades 9–12 report being bullied on school property in the 12 months prior to the survey” ( stopbullying.gov ). Bullying is something that has been around since anyone can remember. It refers to any harmful, unwanted, and aggressive behavior among children which occurs in different ways: physical, relational, and verbal. As technology becomes more and more prevalent in teenager’s life, cyberbullying has become another type of bullying that is on the rise of severity and popularity. This problem harmfully affects one’s mental stability, emotional and social status hence lower school’s performance. Therefore, the education system in the U.S. may become less valuable since students will start to develop insecurities and negative attitudes towards school and focus on self-defense instead of their academic studies. With that being said, the intervention of safety measures to prevent and eliminate both school bullying and cyber bullying would improve the quality of education in schools with the help of teachers, parents, students, and even the government. Negative acts qualified as bullying only when they take place repeatedly and overtime, and if the acts are intentional and the victims have difficulties defending themselves (Olweus 197). The effects on bullying a child can be very traumatizing and may escalate into serious forms of antisocial behavior if not carefully considered. These effects are sometimes long-lasting and can encourage the victim to take dangerous measures to forget the incidents. Based on the Children and Schools (Smokowski 104), the victims may gradually see themselves as outcasts

Because bullying occurs mostly at an academic environment, it is more likely for the victims wanting to quit school to avoid any fearful circumstances. It is also critical that bullying often happens to teenagers, when their emotional and mental health are still developing, that could cause permanent traumatizes and health issues. “Other researchers reported that more than one in five middle school students said that they avoid restrooms at school out of fear of being bullied” (Smokowski 104). As they grow older, “male victims experience psychosocial difficulties such as inhibition with women during adulthood and may have problems in their sexual relationships” (Smokowski 105), which could be seen as a long-term effect. On one hand, cyberbullies can easily take on fake internet identities or even the identities of other students so that the victims often do not know who the bully is, or why they are being targeted. Mr. Wistocki said, students were spearing rumors about others and posting videos of a fight on social medias like TikTok, Snapchat, and mostly Instagram to ‘spill the tea’ (Jargon). Cyberbullying also gives the bullies physical distance from their victims, while at the same time allowing for a greater audience. “They found that many children who reported participating in cyberbullying also had poor parent-child relationships… Cyberbullies are more likely than non- cyberbullies to engage in frequent daily internet use, which in turn leads to more opportunities for cyberbullying (Accordino 17). Because of this, cyberbullying, unlike any face-to-face bullying, is usually permanent. Not only does cyberbullying follow students from school to their homes, but harassing comments can be read and remembered even years later. Taking these consequential effects into consideration, bullying and cyberbullying are obviously a major concern in our academic environment. Despite having optimal solutions by the
